How does one go about renting a house in HCMC? My wife, daughter and I are heading to HCMC, and I'm wondering:

- Is it even possible to rent a place in HCMC? When I last lived there in the early 90s, foreigners had a very difficult time renting due to a number of factors; I think it might have even been illegal to rent without a sponsor.

- What is rent like for a modest two-three room place?

- Which neighborhood do you recommend for raising kids? Not really worried about commuting, just would like to get an idea.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Hi

It isn't a problem. We (4 teachers) rent a house in distrct 3 for $800.

You can get better if you search long enough. Try getting a Vietnamese person to help you, coz the best ads aren't in "rich" (English).

Uhhh....that's $800 all together.

I choose to go the cheap hotel route, or rooms in houses outside of Pham Ngu Lao.
The possibilities are endless and you will find what you need.

staying in de tham for like $6 a night

it's a room in a house - fan, hot shower, tv - it does the job

i am thinking to move to something more comfortable though

from what i gather mini-hotels can be had for 200 - 300 bucks per month but how much do you reckon i can knock gran and gramps down to? they are quite sweet but i would need to cut a deal to make it worth my while staying there, otherwise the mini-hotel route looks better

having rinsed my savings on an ill-advised holiday in thailand i need to make this work for me. breakfast is costing a buck or two a day and then there is laundry to consider

any advice for this gawky western neanderthal with a strong aversion to buddhism would be greatly appreciated Laughing
