I was wondering if a lot of jobs come available in January;
when the advertisements tend to come online;
and if some of them are available until the summer (e.g. six months contracts)?

In my particular case, I'm a graduate with CELTA and, post-qualifying, one year's part-time experience teaching multi-lingual classes and one year's full-time experience, teaching monolingual.

People who answer this might also comment on this from the position of newbies, as this would make the responses useful to a wider range of people.

I'm not worried about the country. My intention is to apply to my country of choice for a September start. In the meantime, I would rather gain experience anywhere, e.g. between say late January and July. Maybe the Czech Republic, or Slovakia, or China, or Hungary or Russia. Not too bothered really.

Given the icon, I assume that irony is intended. What is the relationship between not caring about location and one's professionalism? I'm never late for lessons, which are all prepared. My students' feedback is excellent. What gives you grounds to jump to such a conclusion? (And what is NCTBA, if we're talking about being serious?) If you want to give advice, give advice. Otherwise, why not wait until you have something valuable to contribute?

In case it's not something you know about, many of the schools of choice offer new jobs in September. So I have to find something else in the meantime. And I don't see why going to another country in the meantime and broadening my experience is a bad idea.

In the countries you mention, there is usually a small intake of teachers in January - mostly to fill in for people who didn't return after Christmas, and for new clients who started contracts in January.

You would likely be facing putting together several part-time contracts, though. If you are not an EU citizen, this could be problematic as you need one school to be committed enough to you to go through the visa process, and no-one is likely to do this for a part-timer. This means you would really have to find one relatively full-time position, narrowing your job search to only these.

If you are from the EU, no problems, so long as you are willing to accept the option of cobbling together work from here and there.

Of course, you might get lucky and land something full time; I'm not saying it isn't possible - but your options and chances increase if you don't have to limit your search to full time only.

The economy's tight in all the countries you mention, and there are lots of teachers around in general.

Oh, by the way, for the Central European region, the openings won't come up online. You would need to come over and look for them on foot - the start up costs are something to consider.

If you're willing to look outside of Europe, many of the regional colleges here in Oman have mid-year openings, and the contracts generally end in July/August. You'd likely get airfare and housing, too. Look on tefl.com.

For the area you're looking at, there's probably just a little since many schools have less students in the summer
