Question re this,

If someone isn't happy with a post. Any person or any post they can do a click and report that person or post to the moderaters.

My question is "is the poster of the alleged offending post contacted in any way to be informed of the decision or in fact they have been reported?"

Regards Leon...

Moderation style differs between individuals. Though we generally don't question each other's decisions, a mod may or may not choose to send a PM or write a response up on the thread as to what's been (has been) actioned.

For me personally, you will generally know as I will either contact people directly via PM (to both the reporter and the reportee) or write some kind of statement on the thread... Especially if you are on the receiving end of a complaint that's warranted (in the mod's eyes).

Otherwise, no... You do not know if someone has complained about you to the mods or if some decision has been made.

If I PM you to inform you of a complaint someone has made against you, I will rarely, if ever divulge who made it (for obvious reasons).

Does this new function not cause extra work for the mods? I've lost count of the number of times I have read 'You have been reported to the mods" Usually on the Turkey Forum.

Yes & no... It DOES cause more work in the sense that everyone can whine at the drop of the slightest insult.

Eg.

WAAAH! <user> just called me an <insult>. Please ban him immediately.

But on the other hand, it often allows the mods to drop in on a thread before an issue escalates to the point of irrecoverably deleting the whole thread and just editing out some of the noise.

For me at least, I'm glad the feature exists.

Just a tip for those of you who DO use it -- the mod reading the report isn't always current on what's going on, so please avoid comments like:

- Rude. (no detail given)
- <user> is at it again. (at what again?)
- <user> is giving incorrect information (he has the right to do so)
- <user> called me a dork. (so?)

Try to give a BRIEF indication of what we're looking for and why. And whenever possible, which of the forum's rules are being broken.... Helps new mods (like me) a ton!

Eg.

-<user> has made hateful remarks towards <other user>
-this thread has lost its relevance. Everyone is arguing in circles. Consider locking?
- Can you PM <user> and ask them to stop calling me an <insult>

This way, it is definitely more help than hinderance.

Cheers,

JD

One last point

IF possible add a link of the thread to the mail or tell us where the thread is in what country. I get mails from people telling me about someone I have never heard of in Mexico or somewhere (I'm in Japan) and I have to do a member search to see where they last posted mails.

Help us help you by telling us where the fire is.

Yeah, I have been the victim of that too.
