Hi everyone!

Im starting a career change pretty late in the game (Im 39!), but Ive wanted to teach English abroad for years, and if I dont do it nowI never will.

A friend of mine showed me this web site and I think its great! However, I really want to teach in Nepal and havent seen any forums for it. So I have a bunch of questions for you all.

I was told that CELTA was the way to go for certification, but there isnt a CELTA course available in Nepal. I have however found TEFL International and American TESOL courses in Nepal. Has anyone taken either of those? Are they worth it? Ive noticed on many forums that people think that these certificates are uselessis that true?

I also noticed that there werent a lot of jobs in Nepal listed on this site. Are jobs rare there? Should I consider another location? My second choice is Latin America and I believe there's a CELTA program in Buenos Aires. Has anyone taken that program? Does anyone know what is the job market is like in Latin America?

Im hoping to leave next summer or fall, but thought it would be best to start preparing now. I would greatly appreciate any advice or resources that will help me fulfill my dream of teaching English abroad.

Thanks in advance for helping out a newbie!

I'm no expert on Nepal (though I have been there once), but I think that the country is simply too poor as a viable EFL destination. Also, many Nepalese (especially those who can afford lessons) already speak English.
IMO, your best bet, if you want to get to that region, is to check out jobs in India at a call center and travel to Nepal.
Just my 2 cents. Good luck!

Hi jpvanderwerf2001,

Thanks for your reply. I was afraid that there wouldn't be a lot of work in Nepal. Bummer. I guess it's back to drawing board.

Any recommendations for a good CELTA/TEFL program in Thailand?

Thanks!
