|
|
1. My primary job at a buxiban pays me 500 NTD after taxes (in other words, my pre-tax pay rate is supposed to be calculated so I end up with a steady, consistent pay rate of 500 NTD an hour after taxes). It says it in my contract -- 500 NTD after taxes.
However, just to make sure I'm not caught with any ugly surprises, how can I check to make sure my primary buxiban job is paying the taxes it needs to be paying? I'd hate to find out in six months that I've been working for 500 NTD pre-tax...
2. I also work at an international school part-time. They just pay me 600 NTD an hour straight-up and don't pay taxes for me. They have said that paying taxes is up to me. I know that I have to pay them because we've filed for a work permit, so the government is aware of this job. How do I file my own taxes? |

Taiwan Tax Facts - The Basics
Taiwan Tax Year
Jan. 1 Dec.31
Taiwan Tax Rates
6% - 40% - based on earnings (13% avg. for teachers)
Taxing Wages
- 20% is normally taxed from pay for the first 183 days of the tax year.
- The 183 days are calculated by the date you arrive, not from when you get your ARC.
- The counting is cumulative. If you leave country and return, the time before you left and the time after you return is counted towards your 183 days. * It does not include the time you were out of Taiwan.
- After 183 days, rate reduced to income level and the difference is returned when taxes are filed.
- If remain in country for 183 days each successive year, rate will not go back to 20%
- If you stay less than 183 days, you must pay full 20%
*Remember you are taxed according to the tax year, not from when you arrived in Taiwan!

A quick comment on one of Wally's points
Quote: |
- If remain in country for 183 days each successive year, rate will not go back to 20% |
The above is no longer the case. The new rule, effective 1/1/09, states that (as in the past) all foreigners will be taxed at 20% for the first 183 days. On the 184th day of the year, the tax rate falls to the appropriate income level. (Here's the change) This will occur every year no matter how long a foreigner has been in Taiwan.
So, if you stay the whole year, you'll be liable for your income level tax rate (6% or whatever) when you file your taxes. Since your employer withheld 20% for the first 6 months (and is now required to do this every year), you'll get a refund of the difference. However, for foreigners who leave Taiwan, they will not be granted a tax refund if they leave before July 2nd.
To the OP, sorry, I don't have answers to your original questions. |

So what's my time frame on all this?
Can I wait until next August to file these things, or will I get in trouble if I wait that long? |
