Hi all. I'm fairly certain that I'll be trying my luck in Bangkok next year. I've taught in Korea for a few years and have the standard BA plus TEFL certificate. I've managed to save a bit, not a huge amount as some do as I refrained from risky private teaching. But, a bit... and I'm thinking I want to try to get a place on the Skytrain line where there are lots of teaching jobs in a quick commute's distance.

Is this possible? How much would a flat in the vicinity set me back? Also, I'd kind of like to work 2 jobs my first month or so until I got my wits about me. I've heard it's easy to overspend so I plan to keep my head down until all of the newness of the culture wears off a bit and I can think logically.

Anyway, any advice is appreciated.

Good luck. I don't live in BKK but know that you could find a few places in that area for around 300,000 won a month roughly 8,000 baht. You will need to put double down for deposit, so your first month you will have to pay at least 24,000 baht.

I wouldn't want to work two full time jobs. 2 part time would be ok. No need to burn yourself out the first 2 months either. You will have some start up costs like anytime that you move, but figure your severance pay from your job in Korea will probably take care of your first month before you find a job. You shouldn't expect too much for salary but you could probably get around 40,000 if you look hard and make some contacts.

Don't fall into the traps that many people do, keep an eye on your spending and don't keep converting back to Won or your native currency. Think in terms of Baht and you will survive a lot longer on your savings.
