King Abdullah rocks!
From LA Times...
http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/babylonbeyond/2009/09/saudi-arabias-first-co-educational-university-a-graduate-research-institution-known-as-theking-abdullah-university-of-sci.html

Or should I feign a sour distrust for such things if discussed?
I have read on this board that Jeddah was progressive...but wow.

Well, academic freedom, gender equality, and human rights do not come through Hollywood and Bollywood type ceremonies. Real freedom should come from within the citizens of the Magic Kingdom, not from the wells of black gold!

As far as Uncle Bandar is holding his camel in his left hand and his stick in his right hand, I see no real progress in the near future!

Jeddah is indeed progressive by Saudi standards, but that is all very relative. In fact, as the article clearly says, the university is not in Jeddah but about 40 km outside the city.

KAUST has been discussed on this board before. Opinions are mixed as to whether or not it represents any genuine change in the Kingdom.

One small step for each Saudi woman; one giant leap for Saudi womankind.
Very Happy

How many Saudi women are going to study at KAUST?

Not very many, I would imagine.

Dear Cleopatra,

"How many Saudi women are going to study at KAUST?

Not very many, I would imagine."

Someday they may
In the land of shway, shway.

The real question is how many families would allow their daughters to study at KAUST? I agree that it will be very few indeed.

"King Abdullah rocks!" Probably way up in the hierarchy of the Pantheon of Asinine remarks.

How about this: "King Abdullah routinely allows for the decapitation of human beings...and...um...he rocks!"

Sheesh!

Dear NCTBA,
BUT - - - better Abdullah than Sultan or (Aaaaaagggghhhhh) Nayef.

Let's hope that when Abdullah kicks off, the line of succession will jump a generation.

John

Agreed, John...if we can avoid the suvivors of the "Sudeiri Seven", then the kingdom will be better off...but really..."King Abdullah rocks!"

As John Stossel would say: "GIVE ME A BREAK!"

Yer gal-pal,

NCTBA

P.s.- I taught two of Nayef's sons... Laughing

Dear NCTBA,

"I taught two of Nayef's sons."

Holy Catfish - let's hope and pray THEY'RE not in line for the succession.

Thanks to everyone for responding. My ignorance of contemporary Saudi society was matched by an intuition a cultural precedent divides opinion.

NCTBA is amazed by my way upness of a Pantheonic hierarchy of asininity

Well, the founder of the Magic Kingdom, King AbdulAziz, has around 30+ sons, half of them are alive, and are waiting in the queu for kingship!
My friend, Otaibah bin Sultan, who is a Saudologist and Futurologist, predicted that Prince Nayef who is the 3rd in line will be the next King of the Magic Kingdom! And if he became the next king, then say bye-bye to Uncle Bandar! Laughing
