Well, academic freedom, gender equality, and human rights do not come through Hollywood and Bollywood type ceremonies. Real freedom should come from within the citizens of the Magic Kingdom, not from the wells of black gold!
As far as Uncle Bandar is holding his camel in his left hand and his stick in his right hand, I see no �real� progress in the near future! |

Jeddah is indeed progressive by Saudi standards, but that is all very relative. In fact, as the article clearly says, the university is not in Jeddah but about 40 km outside the city.
KAUST has been discussed on this board before. Opinions are mixed as to whether or not it represents any genuine change in the Kingdom. |

BUT - - - better Abdullah than Sultan or (Aaaaaagggghhhhh) Nayef.
Let's hope that when Abdullah kicks off, the line of succession will jump a generation.

Thanks to everyone for responding. My ignorance of contemporary Saudi society was matched by an intuition a cultural precedent divides opinion.

Well, the founder of the Magic Kingdom, King AbdulAziz, has around 30+ sons, half of them are alive, and are waiting in the queu for kingship!
My friend, Otaibah bin Sultan, who is a Saudologist and Futurologist, predicted that Prince Nayef who is the 3rd in line will be the next King of the Magic Kingdom! And if he became the next king, then say bye-bye to Uncle Bandar! |
