Are there as many job opportunities for the spring semester as the fall? I imagine there are less because people stay on from the fall. Or not?

Dear Umm 'Abdil-Wahhaab,
In my experience, there are far fewer opportunities for a January hire, but there will almost certainly be at least some.
Regards,
John

Yeah, thats what I thought. Are the packages pretty much the same? In other words, are you able to find a decent opportunity in the spring or its better to try to leave in the fall because you'll miss out on the good stuff?

Most places do the bulk of their hiring in the autumn, but some have vacancies in January/February. Some places hire all year round.

Dear Umm 'Abdil-Wahhaab,
In many places, one big disadvantage would be regarding the End of Service bonus.
Coming in January, a teacher would almost certainly not have those first seven or so months considered as part of the EOS bonus time.
Regards,
John

Why not John?

The bonus is given upon completion of a contract, so, as long as you complete it, it's immaterial when that contract begins.

Dear Cleopatra,
Well, I know that at the IPA, teachers who arrived in January worked for the spring semester, went on holiday, and then retuned on a year (renewable) contract.
The End of Service bonus time consideration is for "full-years served." So, at the end of say, 2 1/2 years, that teacher who came in, say, January of 2008 and decided to leave in, say, June of 2010, would get only a month's salary (half-a-month a year) for 2 1/2 years of service.
Regards,
John
P.S. I know this personally because I did come back in January one year, left three and a half years' later, and received credit for only three years.
I never knew of anyone who was hired in January and left in another January.

Well yes, that's certainly true. You won't get a full year's bonus if you only work half a year. But assuming that most people who come in January will stay for at least one year and maybe a lot longer, they will not miss out on much when it comes to bonus time.
