Looking for the advice of ESL teachers out there right now! What's the word? Where is the most money to be made?

About me:

I am a 31-year old white Canadian woman. I have an education-related Master's degree, and 10 years experience in Japan, Korea, Nepal, Bangladesh and Canada. I am also soon to be CELTA-certified.

I also have serious student loan debt and am interested in - surprise - making money (which will then allow for more noble pursuits).

I've been out of the ESL teaching game for a while, so am wondering...is there a general consensus these days about where the best money is to be made (given my qualifications)?

Advice much appreciated!

Yes, went to Japan at 21 and have been teaching ever since, even throughout my Master's. So any ideas about where the money is these days? I was thinking Korea because I've taught there before and there are lots of privates to be had, but people are telling me the economy is not doing so well and the Cdn-won exchange rate is not great.

Yep, it's not that hard. I started teaching a couple months after I turned 20. I had finished HS and uni early. I suggest, for the OP, to go to the Middle East

Without a doubt, the ME is the highest paying area especially Saudi. However, being a woman, your opportunities there might be limited. You might want to stick with the more liberal ME countries. I have heard of individual jobs around the world that pay more but the ME has the highest salaries on average.

Dear Sadebugo,
I'd say the UAE pays, on average, better than Saudi - and the "life-style" there is far more congenial.

John

You're probably right, John. I've never worked in the UAE so I'm not sure. My heart will always be with Saudi though:)

I must agree with John (It's a Dave's eslcafe requirement!). Saudi has become a rip off. Most people will NOT get the pay and benefits that you and I got at SALTS, Sado. For those qualified, the U.A.E. is the best avenue to revenue to pursue. Qatar is running a close second but is still two or three lengths behind.

Your heart lies in saudi??? Surly, you jest!

Dear NCTBA,

"Your heart lies in saudi??? Surly, you jest! "

Depends on your definition of "lies", doesn't it?

John

Why is it so difficult to believe that I still have a fond place in my heart for the Magic Kingdom:)
