Hello!

Can anyone recommend any books that deal with teaching adult Chinese students in an ESL context (Canada or the United States) as opposed to an EFL context? Anything specific to immigrants would be even better. I am in an area where most students are from Taiwan or Bejing, adult, and female (all have children in the public school system).

I found a similar book once at the library, but it was Los-Angeles-specific and focused exclusively on Mexican immigrants.

Thanks!

In China, almost all of the language books that I worked with were ESL. Considering the fact that most of the students will never leave their country, issuing ESL books is rather stupid.

Are you in China or in the states? Most of the Chinese ESL books that I've worked with were geared toward Chinese students living in the UK.

Very little has been written to my knowledge about teaching either EFL or ESL in a Chinese context. One reason is that the Chinese government doesn't encourage Action Research. Added to that the chronic instability and sheer incompetence of most schools inside China makes any properly conducted, long term research project extremely difficult.

Nevertheless after five years of working in China I have a lot of ideas and examples, many of which challenge assumptions that underlie most TESOL training courses. If any publishers are reading this and would be interested in commissioning such a book I would like to hear from them by PM.

Why don't you search on www.amazon.com? I have seen many ESL teaching books on it, although I've never found one on a Chinese context.
Still, it's worth it to look.
