I'm currently completing a graduate degree in education in Brisbane, Australia and am thinking about applying for a job in Abu Dhabi after I graduate. The job ad I am answering says that teachers will make 4000-$6300/month Canadian and have an free accommodation provided as well as a bonus for completing a 2 year contract. I was wondering if this will be enough money to support myself and my fiance (who will be my wife by the time I move there)?
I was also wondering if she will be able to find employment in Abu Dhabi? She is a Japanese national and wants to work while we are there. |

If you check the search function for this board, you should be able to come up with some information to help you focus your questions.
We have no idea how you live - 5* hotels for dinner, drinks, entertainment, the latest 4x4, etc. so it's impossible to say if this is enough $$ - nor do we know what you want to achieve (save, break even, go in the hole?)
This is not meant to be mean, but you have to be more specific in order for us to give you useful feedback - try the search first. There have also been questions about opportunities for Japanese "nationals" (for lack of a better word) to find work in the emirates.
Try this first and then we'll be able to help you out. |

Depending on where you end up living, and if you have a furniture allowance, that should be enough to live on. I am also supporting my spouse and we're able to live quite well, and still save. Of course, it really does depend on what kind of lifestyle budget you have.
Even on my salary (about the same as you mentioned), we have taken a few vacations, gone scuba diving, stayed at a few resorts.... not every weekend, of course!
What does your wife do? She might try to look for something in her field before arriving. |

Sorry for the lack of detail in my post, I was writing it between classes and I didn't have too much time. I'll definitely spend some time this weekend searching old topics on this forum. Thanks for the suggestions. |

Hello Kendo,
Where you will be on that salary range depends on your CV. With only a brand new MA, you would slot near the bottom. If you also have a CELTA and 10 years of teaching at universities somewhere (Japan?), you should move up nicely - if your experience matches the job applied for... it would be close to the top. But with a standard Gulf contract there is no reason why you couldn't save and cover your expenses at the bottom of that scale. As they have said above, it depends on your lifestyle.
One thing I would recommend is to check out the various employers and apply to the ones normally recommended on this board. One problem for you is that few of them will even consider you until that degree is completed. Some of them will not even look at your application until it is in hand.
