I have a friend going to teach in china on an L visa with a school through Yulun education. Just wondering if anyone had come across (or is) a teacher that came over on an L visa and had it converted there by the school. How can we check on their ability to change a L visa to a Z visa on arrival?

Thanks!

Well you're going to have to leave again to apply for the Z-visa. If they do so. You would probably go to Hong Kong.

Basically just ask them will they be paying the expense for going to HK to get the visa. That should give you an indication. Because you're just not going to know if they really are going to put you on a Z-visa, or keep you on L.

The most reliable indicator is the testimony of other foreign teachers, past and present. If you cannot verify through their previous experience that the school has the ability to change L to RP, then a person should be wary.

If a school / organisation either can not or will not provide the correct documentation for obtaining a Z visa, then they are VERY suspect.

Why do they want your friend to come over on an L?

In many cases, this scenario means that the school is possibly illegal (doesn't have a licence to operate as a school) or does not have the necessary licence to employ foreigners, and so, can not change the visa status, even though they say they can.

Be very wary.
