Looks like an average or standard uni contract but 360 teaching hours per semester (20+ weekly) is already so high the 40 rmb for extra periods over that is almost a slap in the face.

Put in perspective, however, even contracts like this won't keep people away. The TEFL profession is growing too quickly and there are too many teachers coming to China.

Isn't Chongqing a highly desirable place for foreigners to live and work? Chances are the hours and overtime rate at CQUT won't suck to everyone.

And that sucks! Laughing

To be honest, the working arrangements on that job posting look fraught.

If you have a fixed weekly schedule with the exact teaching hours stipulated, life is simple and it is easy to keep track of what you are doing.

There are so many "add ons" at this university, the chances are that the FT who agrees to it will end up working many extra hours and not getting paid.

The overtime is supposed to kick in after the first 360 hours of classroom teaching, "office hours", Speaking Competitions and English Corners during each semester, presumably?

Who will keep count of it all? I bet the school administration don't. It will probably be left to the FT to log all of these hours then try to battle it out with the administrators to get remunerated. All this for a miserly 40 rmb per hour!

Best left well alone, me thinks! Shocked

i am in chongqing and i am familiar with this uni. yes, the posting sucks and yes it is a standard in the city and/or around.

by the way, i've also been offered a gig at a certain uni in chongqing a few weeks ago and the 5,000 or so salary is right on. i'm under a contractual agreement with an international school here, and the leader of this uni english department that's in charge of this fine program has even invited me to a dinner. ohh, i had a chance to meet the uni fine looking female enrollment officer at that dinner too. i was driven in a brand new honda and served some fine japanese food.

yes, but this "posting" leads to an "offer", doesn't it? Smile

in perspective, however, contracts like this have disencouraged and will disencourage many, especially the qualified/experienced ones, to come to china. the TEFL profession isn't really growing much, although the chinglish teachers with their adorable traditional approach and the oldies have surely increased their presence in this biz. no, nothing wrong with that..just that if there's nobody better/younger looking to take the gig, oldies might agree to it. and, there're a few in chongqing too. i've just met a couple of those in a restaurant across from the uni. they are sooo happily unhappy. what's interesting is that they are over the age limit for the visas, so how the hell could they've gotten it..or have they Wink

cheers and beers to all of our points of views and experiences on

That's less than the minimum wage back home---for overtime?

I'd just laugh and say enjoy your non-native English teacher pals....

You're right, my bad, it was a minor point and unnecessary for me to put in my reply. Thanks for keeping it real, mate.

See, before you apologised I thought you had a reasonable point that a job posting is different job offer as one is pre-negotiation and the other post-negotation, wherein the terms and benefits could conceivably be different.

I agree, but does apologizing make our points any less reasonable? If another poster had complained about my picky reply maybe I would've offered an argument, but it was the OP so I thought it best to concede his point and move on.

This is a small thing that does not merit so much consideration - but - let's go. The Posting contains their starting offer. some people may accept this posted offer. Others may choose to bargain and improve on the original offer. But it was stil their opening offer - even if later altered. my head hurts
