GEOS says if you cancel a contract with them that you have to pay them the fees that it cost them to get you the working visa. I haven't started working yet (contract is signed though) and aren't necessarily thinking to cancel but I was just wondering if anyone knew how much these fees were?
Thanks |

#1, they can't sanction you for penalties like that. It's the law:
http://www.jil.go.jp/english/laborinfo/library/documents/llj_law1-rev.pdf
Quote: |
(Ban on Predetermined Indemnity)
Article 16. An employer shall not make a contract
which fixes in advance either a sum payable to the employer
for breach of contract or an amount of indemnity for
damages. |
#2, employers don't pay any fees for your visa anyway. You pay the 4000 yen yourself, plus whatever for reentry permits if you buy one then. How much did they say you "owe"? |

Just did a renewal myself yesterday. As Glenski said, 4000 is for the visa or a renewal.
Other fees are
4000 for a single re-entry permit
6000 for a multiple re-entry permit
(both optional but necessary if you want to go overseas on vacation or visit home during your stay - the multiple is valid for the length of your visa)
8000 for permanent residency.
And as Glenski said, you are expected to pay these for yourself. Your employer will most likely send you to immigration either alone or with a manager to help you. There are no 'hidden' costs that they have to pick up so don't worry about it. |

Where are you? When I got hired by GEOS I had to go to the Japnese Embassy and pick up my visa. It was 7 pounds!!! which is about 1000 yen. I suppose you are not in Japan yet or are you?
I am surprised though because I thought GEOS were not hiring overseas any more... |

I believe single AND multiple reentry permits are valid for the length of your visa. |

Is that such a bad thing here, to point out something accurately? I hope not. |

No. Sorry.
Glenski is right. A single isseue re-entry can only be used before your visa runs out. It is valid until that dtae. |

Man! You got ripped off. It was only 5 when I went to do mine... perhaps a surcharge for processing a GEOS visa
It's a shame that the OP can't ask them how much they will charge in fees without ruffling feathers. What... are they going to charge for the labour cost of filling out the form? Perhaps they'll want to be reimbursed for mailing the COE to the OP too.
Every penny counts! |

They didn't say any amount just that if someone quit before contract was over they would have to pay visa fees. I believe thats how it went.
I am in America now but I was in Tokyo when they hired me, I just had to return for a short time because my tourist visa was expiring before my work visa was finished being processed. |

As explained before, GEOS does not pay any visa fees, so that is an outright lie and an illegal clause in the contract (nullifying the whole thing, I believe).
Also, you did not have to leave Japan as long as your visa was being processed. Sorry to hear you didn't know that, and wasted money and time. |

Can anyone confirm what a CoE for employment costs?
What I've seen so far is that the return postage stamp for it is about 700 yen, and a copy of the document is 1000 yen. The remainder of the "expenses" is the labour required by the company to register the application.
I found this information here
http://o-bic.net/e/setup/cost/early.html
You can't believe everything you read on the 'Net. Go check with the local labour office. |

I did not know that but its okay. I was becoming pretty broke and going home gave me a chance to get a little money. I will be working in Tokushima so I still needed to get some money to get from Tokyo to there. Its also nice to go home one last time in what will probably be awhile. I will make due, but thanks for the info that is good to know.
Thanks everyone for your help. |

It says a certified copy of the corporate register costs 1,000 yen. And the 710 yen postage is for examination results. I don't think either of these really have anything to do with COE application.
The COE is free, so the company pays nothing to get it or may only pay a postage charge if they are not going to collect it themselves.
We are the ones who pay any processing fees when we submit the COE to get the visa issued. In Japan that seems to cost 4000 yen, but in many of our home countries it is much less. So I paid 5 in march but it seems to have incresed to 6 now as can be seen here:
http://www.uk.emb-japan.go.jp/en/visa/visa-fee.html
So I'm smelling a whole field of BS on that visa fee clause. |
