Hi everyone. I'm new here. I'm interested in teaching english in Southeast Asia. I'm 100% Vietnamese but lived my whole life in California. I was wondering if any/many/most schools would disqualify me or discriminate against me despite my qualifications.

Well, I haven't become TEFL/etc. certified yet because I want to consider this issue before I get started in a career in EFL. I have a B.S. and 3 years of experience teaching science at a local high school.

Any thoughts/tips/stories? Are there any/many non-white English teachers?

Thanks!

1) Yes: for some schools it will be an 'issue' - but I think there are others that are a bit more enlightened and will only care about your skill as a teacher.

2) I would recommend a 4-week TEFL certificate course. Teaching EFL is quite a bit different than teaching science, and I think you'd find the course helpful. Also, some schools will be more likely to hire you if you have the TEFL certificate on top of the B.S.

As stated above, it 'may' be an 'issue' BUT (and it's a big but...) you should have that many problems. I assume that your nantionality is now United States of Yankees, yeah? If that's the case not a prob.

We had a teacher in our school who I could bearly understand. He was from Singapore, had Ozzie nationality and this school hired him (soon fired him cuz he beat a child, a$$hole!).

End of any day, not a prob, enjoy life....
