In my research on teaching English in China, I've run up against all different descriptions of schools: International, Public, University, etc. I was hoping someone could explain the different schools available to teach at in China, possibly the U.S. equivalent, and maybe the pros and cons for teaching in each? Thanks!

university = university.

let me offer some general comments.

the public universities in china are many, and they seem to be springing up everywhere, and because there are so many of them, i'd say the majority of FTs in china are working at places like this.

these universities generally offer: free accommodation, able to procure the paperwork you need for a Z visa, low number of working hours per week - about 12-18, and a decent salary - usually in the range of 4500-6000. if looking for work in china with the least amount of potential problems, i'd say find a job at one of these places.

I've worked at three of these places - one treated me ok but the salary was low (it was my first venture into china). the second offered me more money than the first, but also more problems. the third, where i've been for four years now, has been very good, more money, and better treatment.

So are the universities obvious in that they have the word "University" in their names? Do they post on the various job listings you find around, or do you need to go to the various Web sites of the universities to see if they are hiring? Thanks for the info!

i'd say most do. check the school website for more info, lots of universities have an english version of their website, although it may only contain basic info. another source of info: the schools that list jobs with chinatefl.com give a whole page in english telling you everything you need to know about the place.

most universities hire at least a few people in spring for the coming fall term, and they sometimes hire in early winter for the term beginning after chinese new year (the latter depends on when contracts end and under what circumstances some teachers left the school).

Everything in China seems to get done at the last moment. People promiss they will come to schools and then back out at the last minute. So don't get discouraged.
