I worked in China for 1.5 years about 5 years ago and since then have been mainly in Peru, spent 3 months in Korea. I was thinking about going back to Korea, but the falling won and the fact that my Peruvian husband couldn't work legally are making the tables turn away from Korea.
A bit more about me, I've got a BA in Liberal Arts, teaching certs (not licenses) in Spanish, ESL and Preschool to grade 3, almost done with an MA, but it's from Spain, so I don't think it will count. I've worked in kindergartens, primary, secondary schools, unis, and freelance for Pearson Longman.
I'd love to go back to China, but also realise that there aren't too many jobs for the experienced teacher. And the few that exist are pretty hard to find. I was wondering if anyone knew about good jobs, either at primary schools, universities, or being a teacher trainer.
I looked at the KIS schools, but am a bit put off by the stories. I'd like to make about 8000 kuai plus benefits a month. I know schools in the south usually pay like this, but I'm looking at the north for langauge. I can go in June.
If you have any info, I'd really appreciate it. Thanks a lot.

The Northeast is about the low end of the pay scale, as far as the eastern seaboard of China is concerned. As an experienced teacher, especially with your primary experience, you might be able to land a job as an ESL teacher with an international school such as Maple Leaf Schools (several campuses in Dalian and Shenyang) paying about 10,000 a month plus accommodation. That's about the top end for that part of the country, I'm afraid. For purposes of comparison, universities in Shanghai will pay 10,000 a month for a plain vanilla oral English teacher (often without housing, but with opportunities for moonlighting), whereas universities in the Northeast will typically offer 4,500. More specialized programs may offer 7,000, inclusive of housing allowance. I think you get the picture. |

In Shanghai, for example, most university graduates work for between 1500 and 3000 RMB. A foriegn ESL teacher will get about 10000 rmb per month. Makimg 2 or 3 thousand a month is middle class here, so your teacher's salary is actually big money! Also, any foreigner should be a ble to live decently on 5000, leving half their salary in the bank.
Perhaps you should try getting a job at an IB school. They pay about 200000 per month with a 10000rmb apartment provided. About 3 times the salary of an ESL teacher and about an average Shanghainese yearly salary, per month!!!
Good Luck |

I suspect Shanghai is similar to Shenzhen. Now I believe it would be possible to live on 5000 a month but I wouldn't want to do it. 7000 is possible but I think 10000 is the minimum I would want if I wanted to save money. And that is with free housing. |
