I am a certified Canadian teacher with a BED and a minor in Special Education with one year of teaching experience. I am looking to teach abroad only for the month of July. (And yes....I know it's a short time, but it's all I can fit in with my commitments here right now). My question is....where do I go that I can go for only a month and still at least break even with money. It would be nice to make a little bit, but mostly I just don't want to have to be out much money after the whole thing. I am very open to going anywhere, it's just hard to even know where to start. Any help would be very much appreciated. I would love to do this...even though it's not for that long!

You could try Spain, England, Italy, Ireland, possibily some places in Asia.
Check out tefl.com, they are starting to have sumer jobs.
Also, europa-pages.com |

As you're not from a member-state of the EU, it won't be easy to get a legal job here. There's no harm in applying, but be prepared for rejections. If any of your parents or grandparents are EU nationals, I suggest you apply for a passport from the relevant country. |

I'm sorry, but that OP is a bit silly to me. Consider that a plane ticket to most countries from Canada will cost US$500-1000. Set yourself up with housing and food for a month. Now try to make all of that back just to break even. You can't even do that in Japan (where so many deluded people think the streets are paved with gold...). Besides, what real good will 30 days give you, both in practical experience and on a resume? |

I do realize that I sound silly. I am not looking for experience for a resume. I am looking for experience. In a few years I am planning to go abroad for at least a few years. I am not able to leave for that amount of time now due to other commitments. I love to learn about other cultures, other people, and other school environments. I love to teach!!!! To be able to travel and teach would be amazing! I would love to go to Asia. I would go to India or Africa but I cannot afford the airfare. By going to Asia (or anywhere else with at least a hope of a decent salary) I can hope to not get to behind with money and leave sooner and for longer when I can travel again. By loving to travel.....I don't necessarily love to be a tourist. I want to work....and hard if need be. I want to get even a taste of life somewhere else and learn from others and hopefully share some of my own gifts as well. Thank you nature girl, I will be sure to check out the tefl page. |

Airfare to most countries in Asia would probably be the same, so you are pretty much stuck anyway. I can't speak for other Asian countries, but here in Japan, you have practically zero chance of finding summer work for several months, let alone something for just one month. There are only a scant handful (literally) of places that pay airfare, and they expect you to work for a year. The only exception is Westgate Corporation, and even they offer contracts for 3-4 month duration.
If you are so serious about teaching, I would recommend that you spend July doing some tutoring in Canada or get some additional training during that month. You are not going to recoup your losses going to a foreign country for a month (unless it happens to be the USA). |

There is one possibility-Korea..Almost every school there will hold a month-long summer session. Most take on an extra teacher and there are a LOT of postings. In fact I did this lat summer but I am based in China and not Canada. I had to go there for a personal matter and accepted a mont;s work. Accommadation was included and it paid the standard EFL salary of 2 million won. The problem for you it does not run exactly in July---they start in mid to late July. Also you need to be there although you might be able to make some verbal agreement via the net. |

How does this work in terms of visas? Is there some sort of short term work visa? And would it be possible to come for the month to get a feeling for Korea, and then decide to stay and job hunt?

Hi hlamb:
A 2 part answer. The places that really are "summer camps" as in temporary set-ups out in the country will make sure teachers have a visa. That is because they are easy targets and Immigration have been known to inspect them. As for regular schools that operate all year they dont care--at least most of them. The chances of mmigration walking in are slim and they make a lot of money. By the way the same thing happens in January during winter "camps." As for your last question of course Why not? In my experience these are the easiest 2 months to find jobs. |

Thank you! Do you happen to know the names of any places in Korea that I could try emailing or calling just to see? |

I shouldn't give away my secrets here but start with englishspectrum.com Or just search the web for sites. That site is mostly for people in the country---a lot of temp and part time stuff on it. Actually when I was there there I found several jobs in the (English) newspapers. These days people only use the net so the ads dont get many replies...Also an agent can find you a camp job but make sure the school and not the agent will pay you. Another thing that happens is teachers will want to go home for the summer. If they can find a sub the school will give them permission.
On other summer thing..Look at chinatefl.com and click SUMMER 2004. I checked this myself and you can work July 5-25 or about that. I dont like the look of the hours but Hangzhou is a nice part of China. I am interested in his thread because my contract is done in June. I am thinking Korea again where I know my way around or possibly Taiwan...Good luck... |
