I am considering completeing my CELTA training at a school in Moscow in either Jan. or March, and would like to find employment in Russia immediately following that, instead of returning to the US. Is it fairly easy to find ESL employment in Russia year around, or do most companies only hire in Sept/Oct.?
Also, what are the prospects of freelancing upon completion of my certification course. My Russian language skills are ok, but not excellent. Would I need to know Russian well to find my own freelance work?
One last question......has anyone had luck with being hired by a legit company having taken an online certification course?
Thanks!

Let's deal with the easy one first: Online certs don't cut it with half decent companies in the good times. Now there's a recession on, it isn't any good with even the lousy ones. Forget it; it's not a saving.
September is the usual start, meaning applications in the spring and summer. However, some recruiters will take people for late January or more likely early February. Their big holiday is from the new year for a couple of weeks into January. You would probably have to apply in December, telling them that you're going to do your CELTA in January and would they please consider you for the start of February. Probably a 'McSchool' in Moscow or St Petersburg (see other threads for details), although you could do your research and find a private school somewhere else in Russia.
March CELTA. Difficult. Who knows, perhaps a school will find itself minus a teacher. There are summer schools to work at, but you'll be kicking your heels for quite a while until then, and then you'll be working your backside off amusing kids (hopefully).
Freelancing. Unless you're resident, this isn't really legal any more. You have a tourist visa (no work allowed), a business visa (three months only and even then I don't think it's really for teaching), a guest invitation from a Russian (no work allowed) or a teacher's visa (employment by an inviting school - you could freelance on top of your contract if your school doesn't mind/know). More to the point, however: when you finish your course - unless you've got prior teaching experience - you'll realise how little you know and you won't want to expose yourself by freelancing. Freelancing is for people who are confident in what they're doing, and justifiably so (i.e. experienced people). Also, as a freelance, you would need to know some Russian just to do practical things like arrange what day you're meeting people. |
