My three year Humanities visa expires next August. However, my Canadian passport expires in April/11. I understand that I can take my expired passport and my newly-issued one and get the visa transferred. I'm wondering about what is my best option. I understand that Humanities visas are now going to be five years duration as of next April. If your passport expires before the five years is up will Japan issue the full five year version or a shorter one that fits the validity of your passport? Also, when you do transfer you current visa into your new passport will they extend its validity?
The other issue is that as of 2011 new Canadian passports are supposed to be valid for ten years as opposed to their current five.
So, should I go and renew my visa next August, get a new passport in 2011 and then transfer the visa? How aggravating is the transfer process?
Or, should I get a new passport next summer before my current one expires and just make the one trip to the visa office in Shinagawa?
Thanks. |

Not sure if its different for Canada but this happened to me last year (I'm British). My passport ran out in March 09, while my visa was valid until Oct 09. I renewed my passport in order to go overseas in March this year, and just filled out the form on the Embassy website and sent it off with the old passport and the fee. Didn't have to do anything with the visa. I took trips to Vietnam in March and Australia in August, and just took both passports with me. Same when I came to renew my visa, I just took along my old passport, and they put the new visa in the new one. Not sure if I was supposed to get it transferred or not, but I went past a lot of officials during those trips and no one said a word about it. |

[1] What? The duration of a Canadian passport has absolutely nothing to do with the length of time Japan will allow you to stay in the country. You get the same visa dates as the old passport. One has nothing to do with the other. So in a new passport, the starting date on your visa is earlier than the date of issue of your passport.

[2] Get a passport when you need to. Get a visa when you need to. Seems pretty straightforward to me. You're going to two different governments doing two entirely different things.
[3] Does it really matter?
A Canadian passport has absolutely nothing to do with the government of Japan. There's no 'finding the trick to get a free visa' involved. One has nothing to do with the other.

[4]Have you checked to make sure the Canadian government will even issue you a new passport that far ahead? I can't remember the rules on it.
Things to remember:
1. You do not own your passport. Canada does.
2. You do own the visa (in this country), but a visa is merely permission from a foreign country for you to be there for a specific period of time to do a specific thing. It can be revoked, but getting a new passport issued from Canada changes absolutely nothing as far as the Japanese government is concerned (thinking it does is like thinking you get another paycheque because you got a new bankbook). |
