How long is the New Years' holiday period in Chinese public universities? Has the new semester started yet? If not, when does it start? |

Depends. This weekend seems to be when most students are going back. I know of some schools who are starting on the 15th. Either way, if you are from a native speaking country with any qualifications, you still can get hired. Here in Henan, which granted, has a lot, I mea a lot of colleges, many are still looking.
I ws just "fooled" by a school I was going to work for, but doesn't have the legal right yet. So I called four other colleges, and they all still needed someone (Though most schools already have their teachers)
Language schools are almost always looking |

My contract starts Feb 15th but I think the school opens a week before. That's what happened last year. |

During the interview they said I should report to school on 16 February; later this was changed to "between 12 and 13th of February".
As I see it:
16h is MONDAY - commencement of semester (students are in class);
12th is THURSDAY, 13th is FRIDAY; teacher meetings and allocation of classes. |
