Hiya
I was wondering if I could get some advice from saxoncourt teachers??
It all just seems so complicated!! Is it really that bad or does it all become clearer?
Personal experiences? Out there now?
Does the salary really go as far as suggested?
Advice would be much appreciated.
Thanks

Although, you will only be able to get first hand experience info from people who have actually worked there, some of the other things you have asked about seem like general questions that anybody living here could answer for you if you gave enough details.
Like you ask:

If you tell people what is being offered and how much the school is charging in rent (if accomodation is supplied by the school), then many people could tell you how far your salary will go each month, how much saving potential there is, etc.

What exactly seems complicated? Are you talking about the employment process, visa process, how the school runs in general or something else. Once again, if you give more details, you might find that people other than Saxoncourt teachers can give you advice. |

thank you sorry just a bit overwhelmed with the ol 50 page manual
its 255,00 yen a month that does not include accomodation which is 11,000 yen desposit then 75,000 yen per month 25,000 yen for bedding (one charge) and then bills which is 7,000 yen per month.
You can also earn a bonus of 2,500 yen quarterly for sufficiant over time.. phew...
that plus living in tokyo as near to the city as i can get and liking a good ol night out.. what are my chances of survival?! lol |

2,500 yen "bonus" for three months of sufficient overtime? That's barely beer money. What kind of a bonus is that??? |

Check the zeros there, zaraz- the salary is 255,000, right? And are you sure the bonus is only 2,500? That's measly. |

Lovin' that bonus! I'd definitely be putting in my Japanese-style five hours a day extra for that....
Quite possible that means per hour, which would be reasonable, but be sure they make accurate records of the time you work. |

A bonus for overtime??????????
Legally, they have to pay 1.25 to 1.5 times your regular pay for the hours of overtime you work. Legally
As for the apartment, the only "complicated" thing there seems to be the silly charge for bedding, and the 11,000 yen deposit. I presume you get the deposit back. You should. What else did you find so "complicated"? |

I too thought the bedding charge was pretty expensive, but if they're going to buy new futons, duvets etc, it'll probably work out at roughly that. The last time I bought a futon it was about 6000yen (and I sleep on two), and that was the cheapest one I could find. Adding in sheets, duvets, pillows, etc, plus the fact you haven't got to somehow carry it all to your apartment its probably not a bad deal.
On the otherhand, if there's a bed in the apartment and all they're doing is providing new sheets and pillow cases, then you're being ripped off. |

Where is the apartment located? Also do you know the size (1dk etc or square meters)? Sounds a bit high but that all depends... |

I also am due to start with saxoncourt (shane english schools) in January. I have heard a lot of negative press recently regarding Shane which has caused me to doubt whether I should take up the position.
If anyone has actually worked for Shane before could they share any thoughts. The pay seems to be okay but a worry is that they aren't very punctual with it and expect you to do a lot of overtime at short notice and other generally underhand business techniques are a norm from what I have seen of comments scattered around the internet but I don't want to cancel my employment just because of a few negative nancy's when it could have just been their personal problems. (It is the credit crunch afterall.)
My main question is if I hate it how can I get out? I've heard some conflicting things, how much notice do I have to give and what are the repercutions of giving it?
They've not told me much about the aprtment other than it's small which is to be expected for Tokyo. I'd also like to know if I am able to find my own place, would this be extremely difficult for a non-japanese speaker in Tokyo?
Any help is appreciated...
p.s zaraz when do you go? |

Doesn't matter. Are you getting this on top of the legal hourly overtime pay or instead of it?
Quote: |
You should legally be entitled to ten days paid leave of your choosing after six months (I think - perhaps Glenski can confirm?) |
Yes, true,
http://www.jil.go.jp/english/laborinfo/library/documents/llj_law1-rev.pdf
(see p. 37)
but actually being able to choose which days off you want is not always easy. Some employers want weeks or months of notice just for that, and they may reserve the right to say no.

If you hate it, give proper notice. You would likely lose any end-of-contract bonus in the process, which might be enough to reimburse for your airfare. Notice should be a month at most (that's all the employer has to give), but some employers put longer periods in their contracts. |

Thanks for the info Shiori, could I ask what is your situation? Have you worked for saxoncourt before or are you currently working for them?
What is this about a 55 page manual as well? I haven't been given any such manual - albeit to most likely not look through, but it might be nice to have the option.
Also, does anyone know the situation with facilitating your income with additional work? whether it be private english teaching or anything else, is there a niche for english speakers in japan? I'm thinking of english newspapers, magazines etc. which I would be interested in getting involved in.
And to reiterate my earlier question how hard is it to find accomodation in tokyo if I am unhappy witth the flat Shane/saxoncourt give me? |
