I saw this one posted on the ESL Cafe this morning:
"You will need to enjoy living and working on a small island within a 5 star resort, you enjoy water sports and a warm tropical climate... 50%discount off alcoholic drinks, free laundry..."
Cue hundreds of backpackers: "Hey dude, let's do the Maldives, wherever they are." |

Denise, that's for the guys, of course. I wonder if it includes the ironing as well? |

Backpackers? Not necessarily. I thought the job looked great. Didn't say families not welcome. It's a lot better than jobs in Korea. |

I agree. I looked at it and thought "dream job" and I'm no backpacker. If I were single, I'd jump. |

You'd get bored sick; even people who spend a dream week on the Maldives come back thinking it was long enough. The standard holiday is a week in Lanka to see the sights, and then a week in the Malidives on the beach.
Two years would drive you crazy. Add to that the fact the country is a one-party Islamic dictatorship with one of the worst human rights records in the region and you've got the perfect mix.
I think you'll soon find yourself taking advantage of the 50% discount on alcoholic drinks. |

My sentiments exactly. In a previous life, I used to go to a tiny island on the Great Barrier Reef (Australia) every few months to take photos, shoot videos, talk to people and generally lounge about. It was great and I *loved* it, but after about 3 weeks there, I'd start thinking longingly about the mainland. All of the people who live there are kind of odd (yes stranger than the average ESL teacher ) and have serious attachments to alcohol. One of my good friends who lives on the island I am talking about goes diving about 3 times a year, because after living there for so long, he finds it boring, and takes all that marine splendour for granted.
I'd think really seriously about taking a job on a tiny island...

How much? $2.00 per day or something? Sounds nice, but 'you' can have it. Buyer Beware! |

Is it paradise or not? Reminds me of some ads I've seen for on-board cruise ship English teachers. Sounds perfect at first, but eventually the thrill would wear off and you'd realize that you were stuck out in the middle of the ocean.

Personally I think the worst things about being in the Maldives are
a) Having to put up with the kind of people who book luxury holidays there
b) Being mistaken for the kind of people who book luxury holidays there
c) Knowing that, for the rest of your life, there will be no point in booking a luxury holiday there
d) Moving on. Your next post will seem like your job in the Maldives was a luxury holiday there

The job also comes with:
Shared accommodation (room)
$800 net per month
Pay 50% for alcoholic beverages
This job doesn't sound so wonderful to me. Earn some good money elsewhere and go to the beach in Thailand, where it will take forever to spend it. |

Shared accomodation? I'm like so 'outta' there. 'Dude', you'd never catch me on that 'Maldive' island thing. I would go for a holiday, like, but that's 'it', you know? Beats a 'Holiday' in 'Cambodia'!
