Can anyone tell me about teaching ESL in Merida on the Yucatan? It looks lovely.

Very difficult to find positions in Merida, especially for men. The market is much better for women and there is a strong, pervasive bias towards hiring the fairer sex.

All over the Yucatan it is difficult to find good positions in teaching. All the gringoes want to go there to teach. As unemployment among the professional classes is high in the southern part of the country, jobs in teaching English will go to Mexicans before they go to native speakers. There is also strong resentment toward foreign teachers among the Mexican teachers.

Having said that, yes, if you can get a job in Merida, it is a pleasurable experience. Merida is fantastic.
