Just curious to hear about anyone who has brought back a bottle or something that is not allowed in KSA. My friend is talking about brining back a bottle of Scotch. I don't think it is such a great idea. What do you all think? |

You're right; it's not a great idea. It's a fantastic idea!!! Tell him to bring a bottle for me too!
Fantastic:
1. Quaint or strange in form, conception, or appearance.
2.
a. Unrestrainedly fanciful; extravagant: fantastic hopes.
b. Bizarre, as in form or appearance; strange: fantastic attire; fantastic behavior.
c. Based on or existing only in fantasy; unreal: fantastic ideas about her own superiority.
3. Wonderful or superb; remarkable: a fantastic trip to Europe.
Take your pick of meanings. (Excuse me for committing this JohnSlatism!)
Was your friend drunk at the time he was talking about this? I get some strange ideas in my head and talk *beep* sometimes when I've had a few drinks too! |

'*beep*'? I didn't write '*beep*'! Wow! I'm amazed that it's not possible to write 's h ! t e' without the spaces! (And there was me making an effort to tame my language!) |

Dear Englishish,
I agree that it's a very dumb idea. I suppose there might be a chance that the friend could manage to sneak it in (provided Customs didn't even open the suitcases/carry-on.) But I'd say the chances of getting nabbed are about 99.9%, if not more.
Now, I think I'm flattered, but I'm not sure what for. What is the "JohnSlatism" that you refer to?
Regards,
John |

I can't be the only one who's noticed you have a habit of listing dictionary definitions. Not sure you could take it as flattery even though they say copying is the higest form of it. After all, I did apologize for doing such and described it as 'committing' a JohnSlatism so that would suggest it wasn't a good thing (akin to committing a crime of sorts!)

I don't recall saying it was a dumb idea!

Dear Englishish,
Hmm, well to quote Robert Burns:
"O would some power the giftie gie us to see ourselves as others see us."
I never realized I had that habit.
As for your not saying it was a dumb idea, sorry - I guess I inferred incorrectly.

Well, it may be a dumb idea. At least I think it might be. Personally I've never tried to bring back alcohol. But I've never ever had problems getting trough customs. Usually they seem uninterested and I just walk through.
Once I did bring a very nice dried italian sausage that I got from the Non Muslim section al Al Jazeera supermarket in Bahrain back with me. Oh, and some pork rinds too. It was sooo tasty. Even better when I ate them in Riyadh. Hehehehe
Do any of you have experience in brining something back? |

Dear John,
Your habit of listing dictionary definitions is matched only by your other habit (which I nearly mentioned in my last post) of your giving famous quotes! (Maybe some not-so-famous quotes too!) Re your above quote, I personally think we are probably lucky that we don't see ourselves as others see us and I wouldn't wish for it to be any other way!
By the way, your inferences concerning my opinion about bringing alcohol were obviously on the button.
To Deicide (I think)
Why did you remove the 'fortune favours the brave' comment from this thread? I was going to remark that while this is true, it is (more) likely to be the case that 'Reality ruins the reckless'! (wrecks the reckless? Which one sounds better? I think 'ruins' because I think it sounds better with two syllables)
Dear Taco,
Bringing pork into Saudi? Were you drunk at the time? Seriously though, what would be the penalty for such an offence? If only deportation then I'm wondering if you were looking for a reason (perhaps subconsciously) to get kicked out! |

It is an excellent idea... if you wouldn't mind getting deported and losing all your belongings.
There is more booze here than you can imagine, both real and homemade. Tell your friend to befriend someone who makes [loads of] it at home and sells/distributes it, or someone who has access to the real stuff (an employee of a Western Embassy/Consulate, or someone who buys from an employee of a Western Embassy/Consulate). |

I remember many years ago a gentleman entered the magic Kingdom on a flight from Bangkok, (I was on the same flight) and immigration or whoever done a search on him, and they found a miniature bottle of alcohol in his procession. He was taken away, but I dont know what happened to him. This was in the old days when the airport was downtown Riyadh, and they were very strict. Each time I arrived back after vacation customs would take my suitcase and empty it out on the table. Yes I had to repack it, and dont say anything to them for in those days it was very bad. What nice memories I have of that place. |

Well, everything in life is a risk....and yes, reality tends to hit you pretty hard. I don't know anything anymore... |

I had a colleague who got arrested taking a bottle of booze out of Saudi. It was the weekend and everybody had been celebrating with siddiqi when the taxi arrived to take him to the airport. He got in with the others and one of the bottles of siddiqi. He was clutching it when he went through immigration and got stopped. The surprising thing was that when he was out of Saudi airspace the stewardess gave it him back.
Another colleague came back over the causeway with a couple of bottles of wine in the boot of the car. They probably would just have confiscated them but he insisted they had no right to touch them as he was a baronet and his father was a member of the House of Lords. We had to send our government relations chap to bring him back after they'd extracted the fine from him. |

OK, I've held back as long as I can:
I wouldn't have the bottle to do it.
(For those unfamiliar with the meaning in that context: British, informal: Nerve, courage.
You don't have the bottle to do that!)

You mean you'd have drunk it before you got on the plane. |

Dear Stephen,
In years past, I did - missed three flights to the Kingdom one time. But I haven't imbibed for seven years now.
Curiously enough, I quit drinking in Saudi.

John |
