I'm from England. It's a dump. I'm never going back and I'm never paying my student loan back. Anyone else feel the same? |

While I plan on dying in my hometown, NYC, the Lord knows they'll never see a penny of mine that they don't garnish. |

Why not? Isn't NYC the best place on earth? |

What do you mean?
Disney World is the best place on earth. NYC is a distant 4th. I'd rather land in Honolulu.
As for the student loans - 100+k in default.
They ran a scam on me. They knew I was unfit for admission, but, accepted me because they had a few seats unoccupied and "wanted" the money/tuition in order to fatten their pockets.
If they bark too loud, I plan on suing them for negligence. It should be interesting.

Never's a long time GH (that doesn't quite sound right, but you know what I mean.) I'm also from the UK with a student loan waiting back home and when I left I was thinking 'get me the hell away from this sht hole and I'll never look back.'
But just three years later I'm starting to think, hmmmmmm... People back home are getting older, new people are being born, I know my Mum hates me being this far from home... maybe it's time to think about heading back. Or at least back into the vicinity (ie, Europe.)
So yeah, I feel the same. But my resolve is weakening and it's happened much faster than I thought it would. |

To paraphrase Thomas Wolfe:
You Can't Go Home Again - but that might not stop you from wanting/needing to someday.
Life has a way of intervening - and disrupting long-range plans.

Yep, I've heard that same kind of kind of comment from several other disgruntled, immature teenagers.
Good luck.

"Never" is a heck of a long time. I have no plans to return to the US, where I'm from, to live. But...doesn't mean I won't. Fifteen years ago, I never planned to teach. Ten years ago, I never planned to "settle down" in a relationship. Even five years ago, I never planned to marry. As a married teacher, I can see that plans change.
Student loans suck rocks. But investigate your options- there can be solutions, and sometimes there can be long term consequences to long term default. (The US student loan system and the system in the UK are VERY different. I'm not an authority, but it seems to me that the UK system doesn't yet have the teeth that the US system does.)
I doubt I'll move back to the US, but I had a chance to do a short term contract job there this June- much enjoyed. You can't go home again, but it's really interesting to try. You get to see what the place that produced you has turned into.
Best,
Justin |

While I'm not about to hop on the next plan home, at least for good, I would like to go back in 10 years or so. I've lived in 7 countries on 4 continents, and well, there's no place like home.
I miss the organisation, cleanliness, (seriously, the US is immaculate compared to Peru), good education (again, come to Peru where parents pay for high grades), and little red tape.
I'd like to raise my kids there, maybe when they're in HS, first of course, have to have kids.
I like the fact that they're given more independence at school, and can work while in HS. My husband could learn English and getting US cit can't really be that bad.
Anyways, not going back until we have about 5 more flats here in Peru. Sure, I hate the country, but housing is cheap, at with about 50K you can buy a decent flat that you can rent out for 500usd amonth |

No argument; the UKs gone down the pan. But who knows? You may have no option but to go back one day to do something else for a while, when this TEFL thing gets tiresome. |

Dear Justin,
"You get to see what the place that produced you has turned into."
And, if you're introspective enough, what you've turned into, as well.
Regards,
John |
