hello everyone,
i have a question for all of you who have some experience working in saudi arabia. i m interested in going overthere to work, i do have a bachelors degree in business administration, but i don't think i can find anything with that, so I was thinking of obtaining an ESL certificate to teach esl, and i was thinking of getting this certificate through Oxford Seminars.
So if anyone can give me any advice, such as what companies to work for, what's considered a good/bad contract, and anything else that you can think of. i m in need of any information since i don't know anything about working and living overthere. Thanks in advance |

Most employers want teachers with minimum of 2 or 3 years experience after training. Your chances are not good until you have done some teaching. |

Al Falak/M-Trading will takeyou as long as you have a pulse and an ESL certificate. Search for M trading and read the threads. They are not an employer per se, but a recruiting company that hires for a few institutions in Saudi. They have a bad rep.
I am just curious, why did you do a BBA? Most people do that as a stepping stone towards an MBA. But if you want to do an MBA, you need to have a couple of years of relevant work experience. So, why do you want to teach English, and what are your long term plans wrt your education/career. You don't have to answer, of course!
Good luck.
P.S. Work for a couple of years in a company, do your MBA from a Western country, and then come work in Saudi Arabia to earn double to quadruple (depending on your nationality) of what you would get as an ESL instructor! |

Thx for the info.
I got my BA degree in 2005, and back then things were different, I had different plans, and yes I have tried to do an MBA, but it didn't go according to the plan. I would still love to do something with my degree, but as I have mentioned in my previous post, it probably won't happen. So, I thought why not try smth. else, and few friends recommended teahing ESL. There was a company called Footprints, and they used to hire ppl, with any bachelor's degree to teach ESL. and yes I am a US citizen, so I don't know if that can help or improve my chances of geting a job. And you all are probably wondering why I want to go and live in Saudi, there are few reasons but one of them is to learn the arabic language. |

If that's the case, Saudi Arabia may not be the best choice for you. Many, maybe most, of the people you will be dealing with will not be Arabic speakers. Even if they are, it will be hard for you to practice Arabic with them because it's likely they will speak good English, and because English is the de facto second language in KSA, meetings and correspondence in the workplace will likely be in English. Moreover, contact with the locals tends to be very limited, so there just aren't that many opportunities to use Arabic on a daily basis. If learning the language is a priority, you'd be much better going to a non-Gulf country such as Syria, Lebanon or Egypt (though the dialect in the latter is quite distinctive). |

Hey Trap , what sort of jobs are there out there for people with MBAs ? Ive got an MA in TESOL and was offered a teaching post paying 12,000 KSA riyals a month, even to my own humble standards it seemed low......
I was thinking of adding to my qualifications, but want to choose something that will maximise my earnings....... |

Hmm, business administration jobs?
White Westerners in management positions in Saudi earn anywhere from SR. 50,000 to SR. 200,000+ per month. |

Not many white folks doing that sort of job. Why hire a European/American when you can get someone from Asia at a fraction of the cost ? |

I think this is not very accurate...there are plenty of Arabic speaking people in KSA from other countries, also there are plenty Saudis that are willing to help/ practice...if you are willing to make the effort. Granted dealing with shop keepers, cashiers etc you would not necessarily be using Arabic, but you can certainly meet Non-Saudi Arabic speakers and practice speaking with them... Arabic is the first langauage in KSA and so it goes...you won't have any problem finding people that speak the language. |

Lacking an ESL certificate/MA (TESOL) does not not always mean no job opportunities in KSA. Don't waste your time with Oxford Seminars just apply to the Yamamah University/SIT programme and start working on your MA while getting paid to work at the university.
I have a job offer from them and there is a possibility that my spouse will be offered a training position through SIT at the university. If this happens then I may accept the job offer from Yamamah.
In your case, having a BBA might come in handy since Yamamah's main focus is on business. |
