I am teaching in Korea right now but was thinking about applying for the Jet Programme (I know the deadline is approaching).
I was wondering if its possible to apply for the Jet Programme even though I'm not in the US right now. |

oh nevermind..I see the answer:
6. Be a citizen (not just a permanent resident) of the country where the recruitment and selection procedures take place. (Those who possess dual citizenship with Japan must renounce their Japanese citizenship before the date for submission of the JET Programme Reply Form.) Applicants who have dual citizenship with countries other than Japan may only apply in ONE country. |

You can apply from the US or from Japan. You just have to interview in the US. Same principle for other countries. |

The question you should be asking is: "Has anyone been actually this stupid (as to have voluntarily renounced their Japanese citizenship under those circumstances)?"
Remember that citizenship is meant to be for life (rather like a dog), whereas the JET Programme is only for a maximum of three years (longer than Christmas, anyway!). |

I didn't realise Japan allowed duel citizenship past age 18. That's what a girl on the JET program told me anyway. She said her mother was Japanese and her father was American, and at 18 she had to choose which she wanted to be. She chose American, but I don't think it had anything to do with whether she wanted to be a JET or not. A little early for that, I imagine. |

I think there was/is a JET ALT here that did renounce their Japanese citizenship to come on the programme. |

I believe the law says you have to choose before your 22nd birthday.

Even so, many people keep it a secret and hold dual despite the law. |
