Does anyone know of short EAP courses for teachers, also online courses? Preferably in the North West of England.
Are there any standard texts which are essential reading etc? thanking you...Sisyphus |

Sisyphus,
If you can't find anything in the UK, Macquarie University (Sydney, Aust) has an online course, called "Language for Specific Purposes". It's part of that uni's M.Appl.Ling. programme.They might allow you to enrol in that course as a non-degree student.
Re books, try to get hold of "English for Specific Purposes", by T.Hutchinson & A.Waters.

I do not believe that any such course exists, to my knowledge.
I was able to get my current EAP teaching post in China because a friend and former colleague recommended it to me as a magnanimous gesture following his unsuccessful interview for the job since he told me that he told them about me. I went along and, to my surprise, I was hired.
My teaching background until that time had been purely TESOL after gaining my Trinity Certificate in TESOL and spending three years in China teaching general English to young learners and adults, plus there was the fact that I was a qualified high/secondary school teacher for England and Wales (in science, as it so happens) and had an MBA degree to boot. For my current employer, on whose behalf I have been working for the past 4 1/2 years, that kind of background sufficed.
The private training centre I work at is affiliated to a consortium of around 17 universities based in England. We work to the consortium's syllabuses and the students eventually take internal examinations without having to take external ones like IELTS.
Rather like sixth formers applying to university through UCAS, our students apply through the consortium which acts as a clearing house and they get conditional offers or rejections from the universities (up to three) that they apply to. If they fulfil the conditions, they can go directly to the university of their choice to study for a bachelor's or master's degree.
Is there anything similar in your background that could convince someone to employ you as an EAP teacher? What kind of institution are you thinking of working at, and where? |

You may want to look into joining IATEFL or at least examining what they talk about / write about. I think their next major conference will be in Harrogate in spring. Perhaps keep an eye on the ESP section. |

First of all, ESP (English for Special Purposes) is not the same as EAP (English for Academic Purposes).
EAP is for preparing students for the specific academic requirements of English for higher education.
A useful text is " Uncovering EAP -How to teach Academic Writing and Reading " by Sam McCarter and Phil Jakes (Macmillan, 2009).
Also : "English for Academic Purposes, an advanced resources book" by K.Hyland (Routledge,2006)
There is a very valuable course at Heriot Watt University, Edinburgh " Teach English for Academic Purposes", which is available every March and June. Contact Ms Olwyn Alexander

Quite true, EAP is not the SAME as ESP - rather, the former is considered to be a PART of the latter !
If the OP is unable to do a specific course in EAP teaching, he/she might still be able to pick up some useful ideas/approaches from a more general ESP course.But as someone has already inferred, one would also need to have advanced qualifications in the discipline that his/her students are studying.Thus, a qualification in EAP teaching should not be seen as something analogous to, say, a DELTA, as being merely another way to give a competive edge to a run-of-the mill BA+CELTA qualified teacher - rather, it is something that would be of use to a teacher with postgraduate qualifications who is trying to get out of, say, the language school scene, by doing something far more intellectually stimulating, involving both his/her own academic discipline and language teaching.
The OP might be interested in the following article re the two concepts: http://www.uefap.com/articles/eap.htm

Unfortunately the Hariot-Watt course is no longer offered, unless it is reinstated this year, I contacted the people who have been running the course last year and was told that admin had cut the course. Their book is helpful. |

From Hariot-Watt Uni website:
The EAP teacher Development course, aimed at experienced communicative language teachers who wish to adopt an EAP focus or teachers with EAP experience who want to deepen their knowledge, is no longer running at Heriot-Watt University. However, the ideas from the course have been gathered into a book, EAP Essentials: a teachers guide to principles and practice. Garnet Education: Reading, UK. Available online from Amazon (external link). |

Many thanks for replies. As always -superb.
Peter hit the nail on the head, it appeals to me as I would like to do something more interesting and 'niche' etc. I am surprised there is a lack of courses on EAP though as I heard there is a huge demand for this in the ME especially. I have taught academic subjects at University level and its something I want to get back into in a way although I am many years in EFL... I suppose there are MAs with an EAP module but I dont have the flexibility to pick and choose MA courses at the moment |

I've heard that it is possible to choose a specialist EAP module as an elective for the Cambridge DELTA (or the Trinity College Diploma in TESOL - I confess that I'm unsure right this minute which one it is), although I, personally, have never studied for the DELTA (yet... ). |

There is a 2 week face to face introductory teacher training course (TEAP - teaching English for Academic Purposes)...a total of 50 hours... offered by SOAS in London.
Apply to IFCELS Dept, Teacher Training Dept
SOAS
23-24 Russell Square
London WC1H OXG
or there are a couple of distance PG certificates (PGCert TEAP) which can be done part-time over a year, offered by University of Nottingham and Sheffield Hallam University. |

For Chris Crossley :
The hyperlinks are scarcely difficult to find with a quick google, but here you are:
<www.soas.ac.uk/programmes/prog8610.html>
<http://prospectus.shu.ac.uk/CourseEntry.cfm?CourseId=395>
<http:// pgstudy.nottingham.ac.uk/postgraduate-courses/teaching-english-for-academic-purposes-distance-learning-certificate-pgcert_231.aspx>
I hope this helps! |
