Does anyone know of short EAP courses for teachers, also online courses? Preferably in the North West of England.
Are there any standard texts which are essential reading etc? thanking you...Sisyphus

If you can't find anything in the UK, Macquarie University (Sydney, Aust) has an online course, called "Language for Specific Purposes". It's part of that uni's M.Appl.Ling. programme.They might allow you to enrol in that course as a non-degree student.

Re books, try to get hold of "English for Specific Purposes", by T.Hutchinson & A.Waters.

Thanks for replies. Its something I may be teaching at a University part timehere not sure as yet. Im not experienced in it . I dont have any advanced quals so im planning to do an MA asap. China sounds interesting is there much demand for experienced teachers, post MA?

You may want to look into joining IATEFL or at least examining what they talk about / write about. I think their next major conference will be in Harrogate in spring. Perhaps keep an eye on the ESP section.

First of all, ESP (English for Special Purposes) is not the same as EAP (English for Academic Purposes).

EAP is for preparing students for the specific academic requirements of English for higher education.

A useful text is " Uncovering EAP -How to teach Academic Writing and Reading " by Sam McCarter and Phil Jakes (Macmillan, 2009).

Also : "English for Academic Purposes, an advanced resources book" by K.Hyland (Routledge,2006)

There is a very valuable course at Heriot Watt University, Edinburgh " Teach English for Academic Purposes", which is available every March and June. Contact Ms Olwyn Alexander

Quite true, EAP is not the SAME as ESP - rather, the former is considered to be a PART of the latter !

If the OP is unable to do a specific course in EAP teaching, he/she might still be able to pick up some useful ideas/approaches from a more general ESP course.But as someone has already inferred, one would also need to have advanced qualifications in the discipline that his/her students are studying.Thus, a qualification in EAP teaching should not be seen as something analogous to, say, a DELTA, as being merely another way to give a competive edge to a run-of-the mill BA+CELTA qualified teacher - rather, it is something that would be of use to a teacher with postgraduate qualifications who is trying to get out of, say, the language school scene, by doing something far more intellectually stimulating, involving both his/her own academic discipline and language teaching.

Unfortunately the Hariot-Watt course is no longer offered, unless it is reinstated this year, I contacted the people who have been running the course last year and was told that admin had cut the course. Their book is helpful.

Peter hit the nail on the head, it appeals to me as I would like to do something more interesting and 'niche' etc. I am surprised there is a lack of courses on EAP though as I heard there is a huge demand for this in the ME especially. I have taught academic subjects at University level and its something I want to get back into in a way although I am many years in EFL... I suppose there are MAs with an EAP module but I dont have the flexibility to pick and choose MA courses at the moment Sad

There is a 2 week face to face introductory teacher training course (TEAP - teaching English for Academic Purposes)...a total of 50 hours... offered by SOAS in London.

or there are a couple of distance PG certificates (PGCert TEAP) which can be done part-time over a year, offered by University of Nottingham and Sheffield Hallam University.
