Resume/Background:
4 year BA (liberal arts)
MA in Int'l Studies
4 week TEFL certficate (legit 120 hour course)
Roughly 3 years ESL experience (Korea, China, Australia)

Major needs:
Ability to pay $300 USD/mo in loan payments
Air conditioning and a decent internet connection!

Goal:
To learn Indnonesian as fluently as possible within a year



Can I pull this off in Bandung? Yogyakarta? Anywhere else?

I don't know how much TBI pays but I know that KELT in Surabaya pays 11 or 12 million a month and gives free housing, airfare reimbursement and 8 weeks paid holiday. I don't think you could pay your bills on an EF salary. I haven't worked in Indonesia yet so these are my best guesses. Maybe other people can suggest schools that pay more since you have experience.

there are nationalplus schools that pay 10-25 million. usually the hire in the jan-april time frame and the contracts start in mid july. sometimes jobs become available mid-year because teachers leave or get fired. these jobs generally take a bit of networking, but the are available. the jakarta japanese school has been advertising in the jakarta post and last i knew their starting salary was 2000 us dollars/months. it is a lot easier to get jobs at the international schools if u are a qualified, subject teacher instead of a esl teacher. however many of us do work at natoinal plus and international schools at esl teachers.

some language schools in jkt also pay the money u are looking for. tbi in central jkt start around 16 but no housing. i think their branch in kelapa gading is around 12/13. wall street and a couple other schools also pay in the 12-14 range. outside of jkt you would be hard pressed to make that kind of money. international schools in bali dont even pay that much.

travelNteach is right. Outside of Jakarta you won't easily find these salaries. You asked about Yogya, the language schools there pay some of the lowest wages in Indonesia. Getting that job with the int'l schools (as travelNteach pointed out) can heavily depend on networking. The leaving teacher probably gets them to hire her best girlfriend, for example. These jobs are harder to find as they are far fewer and more competitive compared to the dozens of easy vacancies with EF, etc.

Free housing often means shared accommodation in a teachers' house not your own place.

A small AC unit costs around 2.5 million and you need 5-600 watts to run it, so you might have to ask whether the housing you get has that extra power, if you want to put in ac yourself.

The shared housing is the deal with the private language schools (kelt, ef). intl/nat'l plus schools may have other arrangements. A woman I know is making 15mil, no housing in Surabaya nat'l plus school. Yogya is probably a long shot, the int'l/nat'l plus schools don't have large student numbers and therefore smaller budgets for foreign teachers. Bandung probably has more opportunities.

as scooby doo mentioned, there is a nationalplus school in sby paying 15 million. there is also an international school there that is staffed by expats, but u need to be a qualified teacher, generally specializing in subjects or early childhood education.

however, the vast majority of international schools outside, and even inside jkt, are staffed entirely by indonesias. some hire and expat or 2, and others will hire expat, non-native speakers such as indians or filipinos. the japanese international school has 1 part time native speaker esl teacher. strong competion for the jobs and u generally need someone working there to recommend u.

while u might get lucky and get one of these positions, i think realistically u are looking at a language school for a first job. in yogya, ef was paying 3-4 million, no housing. real engish pays slightly more.
bandung language schools pay in the 7-10 million range.
