|
|
Hi everyone
I've dropped in this forum a few times but not for awhile lately.
Anyhow, I'm thinking of joining the minions of who have transitioned from working in Korea to working in Japan.
I have an masters in education though and I currently work here as an in-service teacher trainer for the national ministry of education. It's a pretty nice job and while I don't expect to have the same status in Japan as a new teacher there, I'm just wondering when would be the better time for me to consider making this move?
What kind of position could someone like me hope to find in Japan? I've looked at Westgate but they advertise here a lot, and that is an automatic red flag for me.
Also, I'm not that keen on the idea of teaching university students in Asia as it seems most schools will allow anyone with a pulse and a few years of teaching experience to call themself a professor here.
So would I be better off looking to make a move to Japan in winter (my contract ends here after the first of the year) or in the summer (around August 2010)?
Or would I be better off avoiding Japan altogether? |

1. Westgate instructors are dispatched teachers. They are not professors! Perhaps the situation differs greatly in Korea.
2. Westgate does advertise a lot, but it's because they offer such short contracts, not because they are a sleazy outfit (like some others I could name).

Early January is not a good time to be looking. Mid to late February would be the earliest, IMO. Lots of contracts would be coming to a close at that time of year, just so you know. Academic year here begins in April, BTW. August is pretty bleak, too, because of summer break and the week-long Obon holiday.
In any case, figure a month or so to actually get started in a job after you land here, on average.
Just what type of teaching jobs are you looking for? Trainer? You weren't clear. |
