Some posters have mentioned the 'abuse' one receives whilst teaching in Saudi. Is this abuse from students, fellow teachers, management, sado-masochist cleaning staff, locals, groups of stray dogs drinking packets of wine in bus shelters who harrang you as you walk past, insects, fans of sequence dancing, 'Europop' in supermarkets, etc....please elaborate..cheers...The Sisyphus.

Dear Sisyphus,

I suspect most are referring to management/administration - although I'm told that self-abuse is pretty popular there, as well.

Regards,
John

Sisyphus,
What abuse are you talking about?
The kind of abuse that you apprehend in Saudi is there wherever you go in other parts of the world, too. I was particularly upset by your bunching together those 'sado-masochist', unfortunate people and groups of stray dogs. Where do you come from, Sisyphus, master of abuse? The Garden of Eden? If you think that where you are now is a better place than Saudi why don't you stay there? You seem to be asking for information but it seems you are at the giving end.
NO regards.

What?! err...that was meant to be just a humorous request to ascertain what people mean when they say you get a certain amount of abuse when you work in Saudi. I wasnt comparing it to anywhere, just asking a general and what I thought, humorous question. Im baffled why you think it was offensive? The post could have been on the Cambodia page, Germany page, anywhere...guess your a little lacking in a sense of humour...

Perhaps, yes, I could have been wrong in judging the merits of your post. But I do feel you have to be more sensitive. Good wishes.

Dear NCTBA,

And, not to be outdone, I am baffled and offended by your offense at the poster's bafflement.

This is "thread abuse."

(Good heavens - does this mean there actually is someone who takes ANY of these posts seriously?)

Regards,
John

Relax Sisy.
As an old Saudi hand..I assure you that KSA is abusive in all of the ways you've mentioned....except for the part about the dogs...they don't like dogs in the Kingdom.
I have never understood these people who go to the ends of the earth defending the place. "What happens in Saudi Arabia is no worse than what happens anywhere else in the world." Possibly true...but only If by "anywhere else in the world" you mean North Korea, Algeria, or Burma.
Saudi's rough.

When I first read this post I took it as being humorous or perhaps sarcastic.

In regards to abuse, I have never endured abuse per se, but injustices caused by incompetence, laziness, and a disrespect for rules.

The real abuse occurs towards those who are considered the lowest of the low in KSA, the laborers. In many cases it almost seems like legal slavery. They are paid very little and forced to work way beyond the normal work day. They often have to share a room that are packed. They are often taken advantage of by their sponsors because they do not have any real legal recourse.

Saudi's rough.
There are ESL jobs in N.Korea? Sweet. And Camus' Algeria? What I can't fathom is how you tolerate "Good Luck with that" and unfunded mandates. How many cameras does LA have now? You're a nose behind London. Glancing blows. Worst donuts in the nation. What's the sewage index in Santa Monica today? What's California's equivalent of a call to prayer and its mutawa? Those frickin' helicopters seventy feet off the ground, pointing its midnight sun anywhere but where a crime is actually committed. LA county's best flew robotic surveillance until the FAA shut it down-- and that's just what makes the papers. Do you know why an omelet can cost $6 in an ocean side diner? Because the Latinos will work unpaid overtime. LA and Oakland schools lead the nation in mismanagement and buck passing.
Do I have to defend Saudi Arabia to honestly frame the common criticisms of Saudi Arabia as unchecked chauvinism? I don't think so. Dervish's post provides a single adjective: rough. Were I to be moved to criticism, I wouldn't begin with inconveniences and "injustices". I would begin with the infantilism of its second sex.

Umm, maybe we could all just lighten up a teensy bit here - just a suggestion.
Don't mean to offend.

If anyone wants to fight it out over which is worse - Saudi or California - why not either start a new thread or PM each other?

I will say this: from my knowledge of how so-called "third-world" citizens are treated in both places, I'd say that those now in Saudi would relocate to California in a heartbeat.

Just an opinion based on nineteen years' experience in Saudi but admittedly only two years' experience in California.

Regards,
John

I agree! Lighten up a bit. Seems like some of you have some personal issues surfacing here.

And yeah, the "third-world" citizens in Saudi are often treated like s**t. They'd choose California over Saudi any day.
