you have a Greek last name!
I recently applied for a position in the department of English. I have the exact qualifications and research the ad was describing; I am an EU citizen and live in Cyprus, but I didn't even get an interview... I am not saying there are no other qualified candidates, but check this out:

I'm afraid that it's hardly surprising, Souvlaki! |

I have lived here since 1979 and although I did not get involved in ESL until 1999 and also have Cyprus nationality by registration(although as we are now in the E.U. that hurdle can be bridged by members of other E.U. countries)this is probably one of the hardest places in the Mediterranean to find any teaching work.Even though a bachelors degree in English is an official minimum, there are private institutes that will give you work without one if you have experience, assuming you have at least a working knowledge of Greek as well, the main problem is nepotism and that there are so many Cypriots on the waiting list for government jobs with contacts who have completed first and even post-graduate degrees and who either grab places at private institutes or even open illegal private places of their own!
The only way for a person like me with just Tesol to get any work here is to give private lessons 1/1 to people who need additional help but there are not many, especially now the recession has started here. But it is only a way to earn some cash to supplement income from other sources-forget trying to make a living from it! |
