|
|
After 5 years in Asia we're feeling the pull of home, our parents are aging and we want to be closer to them but can't quite face the idea of working there full time.
As such we'd love to work somewhere warm over the frigid Canadian winter and return in the Spring or summer to spend time with friends and family. We've worked in China and Taiwan but would consider any European, central American or south American country that offers 6 month contracts.
I must state for the record that I haven't looked into this very much and don't know if 6 month contracts are offered as a matter of course anywhere but if you have had experience with such a thing or know a place where they do exist fairly regularly please let us know.
We appreciate your help.

Unless you hold E.U. passports, you've probably got very little chance of getting a job in the E.U. as schools don't want any additional administrative hassles, not to mention payments to government, involved in having in to apply for special permits to hire non-E.U. nationals when the U.K. and Ireland are full of native English speakers who have the automatic right to live and work in any of the 27 E.U. member-states.
Work in the U.K. at private language schools is very seasonal during the year outside of the summer and one can only really rely on part-time work, which, to be honest, is not all that brilliantly paid.
The chances are you'd probably be better working somewhere outside of Europe. |

You're assuming that I can't get one. I can.
I'm British born and had a British passport until it expired about 10 years ago. Your point is valid but I was hoping for information on places that we would be able to work rather than places we couldn't.

6-month contracts aren't the norm in Europe. Basically, contracts generally run Sept/Oct - June. However, you might get lucky and land something Jan- June - this might be worth a try.
Sorry about the assumption that you haven't got EU passports - you did indicate in your OP that you are Canadian (at least indirectly) and it's a common theme here, North Americans hoping to work in Europe.
Another piece of info that may be relevant is that contracts in Europe aren't generally offered from abroad. Your best bet here would be to pick a region, come on over in either late August/Sept or early Jan and walk the streets. European employers rarely give a second thought to anyone who's not standing in their offices, looking professional. |

Yeah, I do. Forget short contracts, well, I mean, you could do it. But honestly Latin America is behind in TEFL, while visas are the norm in Asia, often here you'll be working under the table.
What you could do. Not very hoenst. Pick a country, anyone, sign a yera contract, and simply give notice. You probably wil have to pay for your flight, but it's one option,. |

Thanks for the P.M.
Where are you and what is the situation like there in regards to quitting jobs and picking up others / Getting visas / Work Permits / Finding jobs in the same country if you quit a position? |

In Peru, work visas, forget it. Unless you're at an intl school or married. Been here five yeras and will be leaving in about 60 days. I can't wait to get out of Peru!!
Here's the thing, there's tons of jobs, but you'll be working illegally, border hopping, working split shifts and barely getting by. |

Have you worked in many others?
If so which one would you recommend for wages v cost of living, hours, etc? |

Scotland, Korea, and China. And Peru. I'd recommend Asia. Latin America, well, no visas, housing, flights. Even China you get that. It's a personal decision. While I might like Asia, you might hate it. |
