Hello Everyone,

I'm new here. Thanks in advance for taking the time to offer your advice.

I'm an African-American female with a Bachelor's degree in Communications. I'm currently in my first year teaching ESL in South Korea. I love it but have my eye on the UAE and would like to start positioning myself as a strong candidate a year or 2 down the road.

My questions are these:
1- Since I'm not a certified Teacher, what qualifications do I need to obain in order to be marketable in the UAE?
2- I presume only the institutes will take me since I'm not a certified teacher?
3- Will my race and gender be an issue in getting a job?
4- Any advise on the job hunt process? Can you recommend any recruiters?

Thanks again! All advise will be much appreciated.

Thanks for asking...

Depends. How high or low are your targets? If tertiary, you'll need a DELTA at a minimum or an MA for acceptance. Make sure the MA isn't distance. For ADEC and the "lower" schools, a certification is required...

2- I presume only the institutes will take me since I'm not a certified teacher?

Your assumption would be correct.

3- Will my race and gender be an issue in getting a job?

Nope.

4- Any advise on the job hunt process? Can you recommend any recruiters?

My advice would be to avoid recruiters... No worries on the "advise", it's a common mistake... Very Happy

Thanks again! All advise will be much appreciated.

Good luck.

You can stop right there. With a bachelors in communication and only one year of teaching ESL you are not qualified for any of the better jobs. (if you were in the UAE, you might be able to scramble for jobs as adjuncts at schools)

At a MINIMUM you need to have a teaching certificaiton from your home country and 3 years of experience to get a job with any of the primary or secondary schools in the UAE. Unlike korea and China, being a westerner is not an "in" on getting a job teaching. They REQUIRE a lot more here.

Most of the employers who would take you with your limited degrees and your lack of experience are people you probably wouldn't want to work for. Again if you were in the UAE you might be able to get adjunct work.

Unlike asia where your race and gender are held against you, that is not an issue here. The only real blatant racism seems to be against indians, pakistani, filipino and asians.

Your biggest problem is your lack of credentials and experience.

Any good school will not use recruiters. Avoid them if possible.
