Hi!
I tried to post this to the sticky, but it was locked. I'm sorry if this goes somewhere else, but this is my first time on this forum (and my first time teaching english).

I received the following offer from a school in Nanchang:

Quote:
Once you are employed by our school, we can offer the following benefits:
4000-7500 RMB (depends on degree and working time )16- 25 working hours per week , (45 minutes per teaching hour ) .
2200-3000 RMB Travel allowance for one year contract
Round-way airfares for one year contract
Same Vacation allowance with the Chinese staff/colleague
University staff medical care
Free accommodation. An apartment with bedroom, living room, kitchen and bathroom, facilities like bedding, TV set, computer with internet access, 3 air conditioners, telephone with international dialing, refrigerator, washing machine, microwave, etc.
Z Visa offered (working visa)
Foreign Expert Certificate/Residence Permit offered
We will pick you up at Nanchang Airport and drop you off there when you leave.
Full salary pai d during the school break (Chinese New Year + May holiday + October holiday, in total around 6 weeks).

Help with booking tickets and hotels.
Orientation and School day-trip
Bilingual liaison
Paid winter vocation (one month) and public holidays
Your basic obligations:
A one-year working contract consists of two semesters, each semester lasting for about 16 weeks.
The spring semester usually starts at the end of February, and ends at the end of June.
The Fall Semester starts at the beginning of September and ends at the end of January.

I responded with a few questions:
Quote:
What is the name of your school?
Is it a public or private school?
How old are the students?
Are there any other foreign english teachers at your school? If so, how many?
How far is the accommodation from the school?
Would it be possible to see pictures of the accommodation?
During the break between the two semesters (ie. July and August), would it be possible to leave Nanchang to travel?

I know the differences in pay are pretty wide, so my questions to you all are:

1) Given that I am completing my TESL, how much can I expect in this city?

2) Is this a decent city to work in?

3)What other questions should I have for this school?

4)Is this a decent offer?

Thanks for all of your help

Mick

EDIT: I received the following response to my questions (along with a request for a MSN/Skype for direct contact):
We are a public university. The students are about 18-22 years old.
We have more than 10 foreign teachers in our school. The accommodation is in the campuse.

I think you should get your exact hours and pay rate nailed down before you accept anything. Not doing so is like writing a blank check for them to give you the low end of the salary and crappy hours. That's just my opinion though, I'm not an expert.

I am not going to comment on the package because it appears to be a very run-of-the-mill offer for a teaching position in a university.

One very small thing did catch my eye "telephone with international dialing". It may be a trivial matter in the context of considering a job offer but I am curious to know if the cost of that is covered by the school or by the teacher. Usually the wording is such that the school absolves itself from any telephone costs although phone and line rental are provided. A FT with free access to IDD could easily run up quite a sizeable telephone bill.

THREE air conditioning units in the same apartment! That also seems to be a little over generous by Chinese university standards. At our university, it has been impossible to get the administrators to instal one! Shocked

This means 4000y a month (or less. not more) for 25 hours per week (or more, not less). 40y an hor, 7 bucks.

the students are wonderful.
the other international teachers are a good group.
several good universities, several so-so.
there is a Wal-Mart, Pizza Hut and McDonalds.
also some of the best pirate DVD's I ever got in all of China.
but, you are in the middle of nowhere.
after one year, seen that, done that.
left for Guangzhou.
good luck.
