What grades are you expected to teach? Will you have to teach some classes more than others? Are you on your own in the classroom or will you have the services of a Chinese teaching assistant/teacher?

How much notice can you/are you permitted to give if you want to quit the job? Is there any penalty clause? If so, what does it entail in terms of, say, deduction of salary?

Sounds reasonable to me, but you might be expected to cover for any absent colleagues. If so, how much notice can the school reasonably give you before asking you to cover?

For a government high school, 6,000 RMB/month isn't too bad, though perhaps the overtime of 50 RMB/45-min class is a bit stingy.

Sounds stingy. They ought to be prepared to reimburse you at 8,000 RMB, considering how much international air fares cost these days. Such a low reimbursement amount would only be considered reasonable in my book if your outward bound was from China rather than to China.
You should also bear in mind that, since this is a 6-month contract, the school will reimburse you only for your air fare coming into China. If you want to go back home at the end of that time, you may have to fork out the air fare yourself.

Again, I'd say this is somewhat stingy. At least 2,200 RMB per year would be reasonable unless the 1,500 RMB is for the six months rather than for a year pro-rated (i.e., 1,500/yr so 750 for 6 months). You'd better check with the school if this figure does mean 1,500 for the 6 months or one year; if the latter, you'll therefore get only 750.

I presume this means that your contract expires right at the end of the summer term.

So, it looks as if you may not have the place to yourself, then. Are you OK with sharing with some fellow teacher of the same gender? 70 sq. m. sounds somewhat tiny if two people are sharing, though. There is barely any room to move around! No mention of a bathroom or heating/cooling system, though!
How about internet access? Is there any? If not, would the school allow you to have it in your accommodation or can you have it only from the school teachers' office? If that is the case, do all the teachers have access to their own individual computer with internet access? If so many teachers are sharing a few computers, that might create problems of access unless there is some kind of rota system or shared understanding. |

That overtime pay sucks.... What subject are you expected to teach? If it's ESL, then it might not be too bad. It it's an actual subject (chem., english, etc.) that might be a bit more tough especially if you see the classes more than once a week. It requires a LOT more lesson planning and grading |

It's a six month contract. What's to lose? Your air fare will be nearly covered, if not completely. 6000/monthly is a lot of money in Henan, equivalent to the salary of a university principal. Considering that your lodging is covered, you will be in good shape, unless expensive hookers are a must for your life style. Even then, you could still frolic a couple of times a week on a salary like that.
Expect to experience massive culture shock. Henan is very populous and a large number of those people are, by western standards, intrusive, coarse, crude, xenophobic. If grown men who giggle like teen age girls, are to your taste, you should be comfortable.
20 hours is a bit heavy for a beginner. See if you can reduce the class load. If not, I'd still jump on the opportunity.
Internet access can be easily achieved with an ADSL hookup.
Again, it's only six months. Great opportunity.

Beware even though they say 20 hours of teaching they may expect you to be in the teacher's office from 8.30 to 5 everday. You will soon find out that the Chinese teachers are teaching much less than you but are putting in hours of time hiding behind walls of notebooks. |

If this is the best that you've seen out there, then you haven't looked hard enough.
If you have minimal education, are a non-native English speaker, or have some quality that makes you stand out negatively like you are missing a leg, I'd go for it.
Sorry to be blunt, but that's reality.
I make twice that for the same amount of hours. |

Thanks for the input everyone. I will be teaching English. Also, I do not share the room with anyone. |
