Hi!

i have been living in GuangZhou for about 4 years. I need a change.

I don't know much about ShangHai, but that doesn't matter. What I want to know is, if I get a job there what salary should I expect? I have all the required documents, TESOL, experience, yada yada.

i found a school offering 8000, and an apartment. I know I should get pictures of the place.

How is that salary?

Is there anything else I should know? How friendly is the society? nevermind that last one. We all have a similar value of happiness, yeah? so, will I enjoy this fresh new cultural expreince in ShangHai, or is it a drag? No Sarcasm, please, I seriously want to know.
Thank you much.

Cheers!

Phil

I haven't actually worked there for any prolonged period of time, however I have been on business numerous times.

In fact, it was going to Shanghai that made me fall in love with China and start on this crazy adventure of deciding to go and teach abroad, that I'm sure lots of people have their own reason for. I will say this, it is a great city, my favourite city in the world, and I consider myself well travelled (UK, where I'm from, Netherlands, Belgium, Germany, Italy extensively, Spain extensively, Portugal, Morocco, the US, Tunisia etc etc). I have also been to quite a few other cities in the region - Changzhou, Nanjing, Suzhou, Zhenjiang etc. I still rate Shanghai A LOT.

However, some aspects of Shanghai life can be expensive. Personally, I wouldn't work there for 8000RMB/month, because I couldn't regularly do all the things I love to do in the city - from eating out at good restaurants to cheesy tourist cr*p like going up the Pearl Tower (things like this can be quite pricey, they really sting the tourists at the tourist hotspots and you'll want to do them all while you're there).

So I would commend the city, but say look for something that pays a bit better, because there is plenty out there if you look hard enough I think.

Re: Friendliness of society - it might be the 'big city' but it is much like most of China - generally a hell of a lot friendlier than the US or UK.

How is his origin "questionable"?

You certainly don't give us much to go on, Phil. If the job is at a university, and you work 9 hours a week, 8 months a year but get paid for 12, then 8000 is fine. But if the job is at a language mill teaching 12 months a year, 25 hours a week plus 15 hours of staff meetings, English corners, office hours, promotions, etc., then 8000 is horrible.

I live in Shanghai and I've seen it spelled both as Shang Hai and Shanghai. What's so suspicious about the poster's writing?

I dont work in esl but I make 20000 in Shnaghai and 6000 goes to my rent and 3 to tax leaving me 11000 which is just ok. So 8000 and a free place is ok if you like chinese food and cheaper places.
