Hello all.
While I'd like to just be a simple teacher, I've made some bad choices. Either I just grind it all out after I finish my current obligation, or I find some p/t work and hope the few hours free will make up for the effort.
Near the beginning of the year, I will need to hole up somewhere for at least 3-4 months at least and do some serious writing- I have a contract to fill.
In order to maintain some semblance of sanity, I could pick up a class or two to break the monotony. I'm not planning on living on 10K Baht, but at the same time, I can't afford the Marriot Phuket at $165/night USD or whatever they are charging.
My requirements are pretty straightforward. I need stable electricity, Internet 24/7 and someplace I can unwind after 12 hours of non-stop brainpower. It appears that Thailand is 'fun' and relatively inexpensive (but I have heard the same about the Philippines and possibly Vietnam) while I could take a teaching gig in Ukraine (or Poland) or S. Korea/China and have the housing and Internet angles covered...it is darned chilly this time of year. I am having trouble making a decision.
The No. 1 limiting factor is the fact that I can't take on a one year contract in good faith until I finish the manuscripts.
I'm looking at relatively short-term (4 mos?) for rent. I hate big cities. I can tolerate tourist towns if I can find a reasonable long-term rental... can't afford luxury hotel places on writer's pay. I lived in SE Asia as a kid, so the food is fine. Open for suggestions.
Is it possible to pick up a few privates or fill in a little at a small school on the coast, or is this a pipe dream?
edit: spelling errors |

Its a pipe dream.
Picking up 'privates' as you so describe is likely to involve illegal working........as in no Work Permit.
Schools by the beach. Likely already filled by other foreign teachers anyway, certainly in Phuket and Pattaya. |

99% a pipedream.
Most substantial jobs are in cities or conurbations, centres of population.
There are a few nice coastal towns which have 5/7 school jobs or academy jobs. Large towns like Songhkla (south), Nakhon Sri Thammarat (same) show up in school job vacancies. Nearer to BKK, there are places like Rayong (boring I think) or even Sri Racha (about less than 2 hours bus but no lovely beach) which show jobs, but these are real jobs, shirt and tie and office hours.
Phuket jobs (etc.) tend to be snapped up.
The whole idea of being able to have 2 or 3 'privates' while living almost on the beach? The queue for that would start in London and finish in BKK. The privates that pay enough would be city people or middle-class family kids.
I get PMs from people asking the best jobs by the beach with lots of pretty girls. Those places mainly exist in Hollywood. Thailand is not a tropical paradise in the way that people like to believe.
Of course, there are exceptions to the rule. If you bought a beach condo 10 years ago and got established, maybe got a Thai partner, got known in town, you could maybe get a few clients at low fees...but I never heard of anyone just arriving with your scenario in mind and being successful.
If anyone knows different, pls correct me.

I shall rent a cheap flat in the Hollywood suburb of Pattaya/Phuket Beach and acquire aforementioned Private Lessons, albeit with the express permission of my partner, who shall be the senior Immigration Officer for the suburb. Thanks to all who responded.[img][/img] |
