| It played out the same as NOVA. One month paid late, the next bankrupt, and no last pay, and no severence pay, either. |

Does anyone have the "best" links for reading up about schools going bankrupt-potentially-or-in-the-process-of . Links would really help as I have a really slow line (until I get some new Hikari installation in a few weeks time hopefully before Xmas) and save going into every google link. Thanks and kudos to you.
Also heard about GEOS too, are they having problems ? |

Japanese staff was paid a few days (or hours) late in August and September. Just to what extent they are having problems, I don't know if anyone really knows except upper management there. I don't suspect they'll be as bad as NOVA or ELS (who are they?), as both companies (I'm assuming about ELS) had all of their business in Japan. Also, in NOVA's case, they were sued for breaking their client's contracts and it eventually resulted in the government barring them from being able to take on certain contracts (I think it was contracts of a year or greater as well as outside business contracts, but I'm not completely sure). Geos, on the other hand, has businesses in other countries and has not been barred from being able to conduct their business. I think it's unlikely that they'd fold as quickly as NOVA did. The most likely scenario is that they will shrink to the point that they're not losing money. They will be (and are) closing down certain branches, combining districts, not replacing teachers/management when they leave, etc. We're also seeing this with Shane, AEON and I presume with other companies as well (although I'm not as sure about other companies). The industry is shrinking. Chain schools that had spread themselves to thin are now feeling it. |

Used to be that eikaiwa schools had a sweet deal. 270 a month, sweet schedules, paid holidays, etc...
This is how it will happen: First enrollment will slow and then...
1) no pay increase (pay freeze)
2) pay reduction
3) contract benefit reduction, moved to part time
4) lateor partial salary payments
5) sudden layoff and closure announcement - less than thirty days
6) final salary not paid

| Couldn't have said it better myself budgie. After 11 years here, the gravy train has certainly spluttered. I am getting out to work in the ME if I can:) I am sure that they have tons of problems too but they seem to pay their staff... |

Rumours are that management at GEOS in Melbourne are jumping ship. |
