It cannot be done in Vietnam (though I've been told that the U.S. embassy in Hanoi will do this by another poster on eslcafe-i know the one in hcmc will not) but you can have a sworn affidavit notarized at the U.S. Consulate stating that your degree certificate and/or transcripts are in fact real and true documents. This isn't the same as having them authenticated but I've been told that often this is enough to satisfy the government officials. I think it depends on what kind of relationship your school has with the government.

What did you do to satisfy this requirement? Any tips/warnings? Maybe this thread can help some folks out.

Yea, I was a bit confused about this. The original sticky for "what you need to bring to teach in Vietnam" basically says you just need a copy is all. Others say it should be notarized. The official policy asks only for a copy. Let me try to map out the two variations for both the degrees and also the criminal background check.

Degree --

Before: Copy only

Now: Orginal send through similar to criminal background check, below, or original notarized/authenticated at US Embassy/Consulate

Criminal Check --

I know that the criminal background check needs to be authenticated, and that someone said that it no longer has to go through the US State Dept, so...

Before: State DOJ/DPS (notarized) --> State Sec'y of State (authenticated) --> US Dept of State (authenticated) -- > Vietnamese Embassy (translated/authenticated/entered into system)

Now: State DOJ/DPS (notarized) --> State Sec'y of State (authenticated) --> Vietnamese Embassy (translated/authenticated/entered)
