I'm just curious, do institutions ever look at, or are they even able to look at, how you did on your CELTA? Is getting a top score purely for personal satisfaction, or what?

The grade is printed on your CELTA cert. I would guess it's up the individual school if they look at the actual grade, or if they care about your GPA you got at Uni.

If the school knows anything about the grading criteria, they won't care. If they do care, you don't want to work for them because they are impressed by rubbish:

CELTA Pass- Showed up, learned how to teach, Met all requirements satisfactorily. Awarded to Newbies and experienced teachers alike.

CELTA Pass 'B'- Awarded to students in group described above who are exceptional teachers with multiple years of experience and higher qualifications in academia than the CELTA faculty.

CELTA Pass 'A'- Awarded to students in either group above who are so incredibly talented at teaching, they should be Teacher Trainers and basically taught the whole course while the faculty moderated discussions and went for tea. Student may be sleeping with one (or all) of the faculty. (May also have incriminating video footage.)

This is my opinion of the objectivity of their grading system. I know of a highly-salaried teacher who 'photoshopped' their diploma. I know of a teacher who can't spell to save his life who has a legitimate certification.

The fact that you have a legitimate training course behind you (should anyone in Government check) should help you sleep at night when Immigration comes knocking on doors in their long black overcoats to haul people away.

doesn't really matter too much, not worth sleepless nites.

97% of people get a standard pass. On the whole that's fair, because most will be kids who never taught it b4 and the video tape of them shows just that. Expect a basic pass unless you are dancing horizontally with the teacher, or you are very erudite and discuss Chomsky every day...or you are already a teacher and it's all easy 4 u.

When I did a CELTA in 1991,1 guy got an A. He had already been a teacher 3 yrs, and was good. One poor girl got a FAIL. The good places will sometimes give a fail.

Later, most employess wanted to know that I had a CELTA. never the grade,

Eddy
