- Class contact hours are average of 20 per week with one day off. If teacher wishes to teach more hours, each hour will be paid USD 13.
- Free business visa ( renewals )
- The school will supplement a maximum of 30 USD per three months for medical fees incur by the teachers ( if any)
- Airport pickup and hotel provided ( for the 1st day arrive before moving to the accomodation )
- Teachers are released from their duties during normal Vietnamese holiday periods or additional Government approved non-teaching days
- Free Vietnamese language classes & Cultural induction.
- Other rewarding schemes granted by the school
Accommodation
Accommodation is not included in the teaching contract. The school assists in looking for rooms as being requested. The rental of a room is about 150 - 170 USD/month with the necessary equipments (air-con, bed furnitures, TV, fridge, telephone line)

That offer doesn't sound fair, but it would help you get better feedback if you read through this forum a bit more: you need to consider/discuss who you are, where you're from, your qualifications, your intentions, where the school is, whether they get your WP, etc. Spend some time reading this forum, then put the contract in some context. I'm sure people will be happy to give you some more feedback then. But again, no, it isn't a good offer as stated here -- assuming an average teacher's background and intentions. |

CThomas, could you explain why do you consider it not to be a good contract? I was looking at that same posting, and it caught my attention as well. The posting (if it is indeed the same I saw) is for a job in Hai Phong.
I'm from Puerto Rico originally, but have been living in TX for close to three years now. Computer Engineering degree, some (voluntary) ESL teaching experience - no formal training at all. I'd like to teach/live overseas, but I'm interested in Vietnam the most.
Thanks in advance
ps. I don't mean to hijack the thread. I just thought I'd ask as well. |

Honestly, this is below a backpacker rate. |

It's not a great pay rate, but that being said it is in Hai Phong so cost of living will be lower and that is a nett salary.
A good way to check if you're getting a fair deal is to check a schools fee structure. How much are they charging the students compared to how much are they paying you? Obviosuly there are other factors but it's one way that can help.
Extras like airport pickup, viet classes are relatively easy and cheap perks to offer a future employee. But nice all the same.
By the sounds of that contract you wont be getting paid over the TET period so factor in that down time. Clarify that with them if you can.
Look I'm of the opinion that teachers should be asking for higher salaries at the moment. What I have done in the past with schools not in major ESL hubs was accpet a contract with a small exception for example get them to up the hourly rate by 50cents. After they accept get them to get all the documents ready and then right at the end tell them you are reconsidering the offer and don't think you would be able to survive on that salary (works even better if you have a wife or child). Work in there something like an end of year bonus or an increased rate.
Its worked for me in the past. Might work, might not. I know I never accept a Viet contract without negotiation. |

I will break it down and compare it to my last contract for reference and then you can decide on your own

Mine was 2300$/mo for exactly 20 hrs/week M-F mornings and afternoons and if the school was not in session I got paid anyway. Overtime hours were at 20$/hr, but never had to work any.
- Free business visa ( renewals )
Misleading since the new business visa renewals are dependant of if this school can actually get you a work permit or not. No work permit and they can't
- The school will supplement a maximum of 30 USD per three months for medical fees incur by the teachers ( if any)
Xrays are 3$, minor knee surgery at a western hospital cost me 65$, even giving birth at FV without any complications is less than 800$. That 30$ is just something they appear to make a benefit
- Airport pickup and hotel provided ( for the 1st day arrive before moving to the accomodation )
Easy enough to deal with yourself. One day at a backpacker hotel and a trip from the airport saves you 20$
- Teachers are released from their duties during normal Vietnamese holiday periods or additional Government approved non-teaching days
We all are. Like I said before, I was paid for every occasion that came along regardless
- Free Vietnamese language classes & Cultural induction.
This has some merit, but private VNese lessons at the Education University in D.5 costs 4$/hr. Cheaper if you have a group. You will pick up a lot while here just from your daily living
- Other rewarding schemes granted by the school
All I see is schemes

Accommodation is not included like in other countries and is standard. That is a pretty lowball figure for housing costs unless you live way out in the boonies. Look to spend at least 250-350$/month for a good place that is more central.
Does this sound decent to you??
No, but you can decide for yourself. I would recommend shopping yourself around. |
