Has anyone ever been able to scratch out an existence teaching in Mazatlan? I have tried on three different ocassions, teaching at CETEC, ITESM, Rogers and private classes, and unfortunately, have never been successful. What am I doing wrong? I live on a smallish pension from teaching in the USA, yet continue to attempt a life in "la Perla del Pacifico."
My previous ventures, all somewhat "con exito", have been in Tegucigalpa, Honduras, CA and Guate, Guatemala, CA. Life was less than safe, but my educational endeavors proved acceptable. Why can't Mexico, in particular Mazatlan, provide both?

Tourist areas suck for teaching ESL.

Too much competition from Mexican ESL teachers, backpackers and low wages compared to cost of living. Also many tourist job spots are recruited from other parts of Mexico, mainly DF where's there a better pool of qualified applicants (English, other language skills, tourism diplomas and degrees etc) for those positions.

Samantha, are you able to survive on teaching alone? I tried PL and did not have much luck. I found the same problems as I read about here, i.e., excited to start, little follow-through on part of student, less than serious adult students, cancelled classes, et al. Also, the competition is keen even if not of great quality.
I have taught in the DF at INMARC and at a corporate provider, but life in the DF is not what I wanted. Mazatlan is, but ....
Does anyone have specific information on leads? Mazatlan or the area?
