The Ministry of Education claims that because I wasn't born in America, I can't get a working visa.
Just for a bit of background, I was born in the Netherlands to two US citizens, both on diplomatic passports, in 1986. I moved back to the US before I was even nine months old and can't even speak Dutch.
I've been a US citizen for my entire life.
My family has been living in America for well over 100 years. I have an ancestor who served in the Union army during the Civil War.
I am completely, inarguably American.
Is there really such an ignorant and arbitrary law on the books in Taiwan, or is this particular MOE officer just a dolt? |

Okay, fortunately the school checked again, described my situation, and it looks like it's going to be okay. False alarm, folks.  |

Glad to hear it got straightened out.
In previous posts you said that you hadn't received too many responses from your resumes. In this post you mention a school helping you get your working papers, so it seems that you've secured a job. If so, that's great to hear! |

Yeah, I was despairing a little bit because I hadn't gotten that many responses, but actually two interview offers out of 11 applications isn't that bad if it's like Korea where I just show up to the interview and instantly get the job. I have a hunch that it's not, but we'll see at 4:30 today.
The good news is that this was a position that was filled but that "became available again." So they're probably more squeezed for time and willing to hire quickly than other positions.
I've already got my good clothes ironed, I'm going to print out several resumes just in case I need them, and I'm going to try to find the location at least one hour before the interview. They say I don't need to prepare a teaching demo, but just in case I have to do one, I'm going to bring some foreign coins to give out as prizes so the kids are motivated and attentive. My kids in Korea loved foreign coins. Can't hurt to bring 'em. |

I think it did, but there were A LOT of applicants since it's a western-managed school and they pay 600 NTD an hour, pay for lesson prep time as well, and have three weeks of vacation, as well as four weeks of PAID training...
I think my chances of getting it are about 33%. Of the many applicants, four made it to interview, one guy will inevitably screw up, and that leaves two people who are probably about equal to me in terms of qualifications. |

Unless you are the guy who will inevitably screw up....
but don't worry, you'll do fine. If it's a kindy job then bring stickers. Little kids love stickers. And do prepare for the demo like you said. Sometimes schools like to ask for a surprise demo to see how you go under pressure. |

Haha, I did the interview the day before yesterday, and I don't think I was the guy who screwed up. I'm 90% sure.
I had the foresight to bring a bunch of unused Korean won coins, the kids LOVED them. Lots of "Oohs" and "Aahs." The response was great. Seriously, spending about one American quarter could have gotten me that job. |

Unfortunately, as an inferior born-abroad American, I've been made well aware as I've grown up that I can't run for president. Not that I'd ever want to, but it's a slap in the face. Obama was only able to become president because at that time, the Panama Canal Zone was US territory...
Man, why does America have such an antiquated, nativist law?
However, I ended up getting a work permit and ARC in Taiwan, no problem. Then I promptly got fired. I found a new job as quickly as possible, but unfortunately, like many buxiban jobs, it sucks and the manager "forgets" that our contract states that my salary is post-tax 500 NTD, not pre-tax, but at least immigration did its part and was very friendly about it (one of the staff at the immigration office had even lived in my home state). |
