Hello all,

I plan to visit Tokyo, Japan and a few other cities in Japan soon and am interested in purchasing custom made suits. Could you recommended the name of any tailors that are close to Tokyo and tthat have affordable prices. I don't want to spend more than $300 per suit. Thanks.

You would be hard pressed to find decent off-the-rack suits for $300 in Japan. In fact, anything under $300 would be considered "very cheap" (in both senses of the word) for a suit here.

Actually the OP asked for custom made suits, which would be difficult to get for less than $300 a suit.

For off the rack with small alterations, it is possible to get something for less than $300 at Sha Mall in Ikebukuro or Zen Mall in Shibuya, both ran by Sakazen. You have to time it when they run their sales and of course not every suit will be under the OP's target price. Sometimes they even include a second pair of suit trousers. There have been times when they have offered 2 suits for 25,000 yen (but usually it wasn't offered for my size, though I do remember grabbing a few suits at some pretty low prices)!

These stores feature big and tall sections as well as clothes for average sized guys.

Question about suits: should I buy one in Korea or should I buy one in Japan?

If I want a black suit/black tie it might be pretty hard to find here. Suits are widely used but they're usually shiny and grey. From what I've heard/seen, black suits are pretty much the standard in Japan. I've never owned/wore a full suit before (just a shirt and tie) but I figure I'll need some for interviews with prospectful boards of education...

Thanks for response. I thought that suits would be a little cheaper in Japan/Korea than in U.S., but I guess not. I have a preference for a sport coats & business meeting type of suits so I will probably have to fork out the money.

What are some nice places to find these? Thanks.

The places I mentioned earlier have sports coats as well.

Yes, and while I'd hate to try and speak on his behalf surely Gambate's point is that *EVEN* off-the-peg suits - which are usually cheaper - cannot be bought for less than $300.

But off the rack ones can be, as I pointed out Cool .

Buy them in Korea. You can buy very quality tailored suits for well under $300 in Itaewon of Korea. If you go into the back alleys away from the main street (with the higher rents), you might even find a tailor who'll make something for just above $200.

I have about 6 suits here in Japan...all of which I've had made in Korea at different times.

I got a few suits made for me at this place while I was in Japan and they were all very good. The price depends on the fabric you chose, but they start at around 20,000 yen.
