Hi everyone,

I'm an ESL newbie that is planning on going to Qingdao for a year teaching English. By January I will have my 100 hr TESOL certificate and a California teaching credential in Music under my belt. I would love to teach at a university there but the salary around 3500 Yuan/month is way too low. I am interested in big training centers like Wall Street.

I would love to get some advice from anyone who has worked in Qingdao or have dealt with Wall Street in general. What are some other options for me, and a realistic salary that I can negotiate?

Thanks for your help!

-Mike-

I don't know about the private schools but the chance of getting more than 3500 rmb per month in a Qingdao University are getting less and less.

The place is full of backpacker FT's who just want a holiday and are quite content to accept dog droppings as a salary. The city is off the radar for anyone who takes serious pride in their profession unless, of course, they are already financially stable enough to get by without the pittance they earn.

My cousin lives in Qingdao, and I visited there this summer, and just found it a pleasant city to be in. I also visited Beijing, which I found too touristy and polluted. There are other reasons why I want to go there, but I get your point that I am limiting myself.

I am of a South Korean descent, and I love the short and cheap flights to Seoul, Korea, and not being able to speak a lick of Chinese it somewhat makes it feel less daunting having a cousin who is settled there.

I am also considering Shanghai, which I hear is an amazing place to be, but that's a different topic I guess.

Thanks for your help guys, and keep 'em coming!
