|
|
Do any members know of reading role models or celebrities who promote reading freely, that is, give up time to raise awarenes of reading or champion reading. There are footballers in the UK like Giggs and Ferdinand and Rooney for Man Utd for example, John Cena the American actor/wrestler - someone says Oprah does some kind of reading promotion. Has anyone been to the Literature Festival in Dubai - did any members get visited at their schools or colleges by any authors? What were your experiences?
Thanks in advance

After 26 long years, I can finally rest easy. Twenty-six years I spent standing in front of a camera, gritting my teeth, and shilling the latest works of every hack children's book author imaginable. For 26 years, I've told kids they could open a magical door to another world just by reading a book, when the only door it ever opened for me led to a soul-sucking career in the horrifying abyss of public television. |
He'd fit right in at a meeting of Gulf TEFLers Anonymous. |

Thanks for the negative post - even though he spent 26 years hating the show just think of how many kids he did inspire to read. Lets stay with the topic and not go off in tangents.
My role models are my kids 11, 10, 7, 6, and 3 year olds. They are forever reading (takes after their mum and me I suppose) and so we make sure we make life as reading rich as possible - loads of books at home, trips to Bookworm in Dubai (and Abu Dhabi now) restrict TV, no video games, read to them at night and read the books they bring home from school every day - it all contributes to them getting great grades at school. And its fun. The books available at the moment are so creative and dark sometimes. Horrible Histories has just started in Dubai theatre (Scholastic) really interesting stuff to get kids into history. |

5 kids - do you sleep! My reading hero was my father. I think you should target the locals - you know the Emirates who are ahead of their field in shooting, Judo, Horse riding. What about the UAE ladies team based in Abu Dhabi. The library association in the states have some great posters of celebrities reading. |

Apart from Dubai Literature Festival and the Book Fairs in Abu Dhabi and Sharjah - are there any other 'Reading' events that are celebrated here in the UAE? |
