I am looking to go abroad around August/September and just want to focus on a specific country to go into. My credentials are as follows- B.A. in English, Certified to teach grades 6-12 in Illinois, experience- student teaching, 2 courses from finishing my master's- unfortunately, the job market in the Chicagoland area is swamped and those who are "less qualified" (meaning only certified and not having a master's) will get jobs easier- thus, why I am holding off the master's.
All in all, I am interested in Korea, Laos, Thailand, Japan, and Taiwan. I am very passionate about teaching and I'm looking for the opportunity to gain some solid experience and cultural enlightenment. However, with that, I really want to have a place that I can enjoy the nightlife from time to time (basically, not in the boonies), but save some money. I know those two don't usually go hand in hand, but I'm not planning on partying every week and I just want somewhere that has some good nightlife when I want to go out...beautiful women help as well (I'm a male, sorry for being shallow too...but I just want to get some honest opinions here). Please feel free to advise on your thoughts and experiences. I appreciate all that comment. |

Maybe Taiwan for money and a fairly good time.
Thailand for a good time and maybe a couple hundred bucks of savings a month. Maybe.
Laos: I dunno.
Japan for a good time and potentially more in savings.
Korea for a lot of savings and a potential good time. Most posters on this place put it down a lot but there are 20k+ native teachers coming here each year. You decide the odds based on the two dozen or so negative accounts you can read on here out of those other thousands.
You could also look into China or Indonesia.
As a disclaimer, a country that you will enjoy is a completely subjective concept. Happy people are happy in most places. Miserable people are miserable in most places. |

Hahaha good point run, I have met tons of miserable people that just keep saying, "I have to get out of here..." and then they do and come back just as miserable. I appreciate your comments, I know I want to teach abroad, but I just have to figure out WHERE!
How have you enjoyed Korea? My neighbor just got back from there so I will sort of interview him on his perspective and I know a native from there pretty well. It seems like a great place, but like you said, flooded with teachers as of late. |
