I'm looking for a university job and these are some schools that have shown interest. Any info about these schools, firsthand or otherwise, would be greatly appreciated! I'd also appreciate any insights you could share regarding the cities in which they're located.

Chengdu University of Technology
Southwest University of Science and Technology (Mianyang)
Sichuan Vocational and Technical College (Suining)
Nanjing University of Finance and Economics
Jiaying University (Meizhou)

Thanks in advance.

A few years ago I worked at the NUFE. It was a good job, but, the pay was low for those with just a Bachelors degree. Too low in my opinion. I have an advanced degree and was paid almost 5k a month for 14, 45 minute classes. Each class met once a week and all I basically did was make 1 plan a week and do the same thing in each class. I asked for a few extra classes and then was earning around 6k a month with a free apartment.

The school has 2 campuses - Xianlin and Fujian Lu that the teachers live at. If you have the choice, I would recommend living on the Fujian Lu campus which is located in the city. This campus is older, but closer to whatever it is that you want to do. The Xianlin campus is a 30 minute school bus away and there wasn't much out there except for a KFC back then.

Nanjing is a nice place to live. There are a lot of foreigners there studying Chinese at NNU and other places, so, there are also a good number of foreigner friendly bars and restaurants. There are also a bunch of historical sites to see, such as Fuzimiao and Purple Mountain. Besides that, Nanjing is a short train ride to Shanghai and other cities such as Suzhou & Hangzhou.

I think they offer 3300 to 3500 for 14 hours a week for someone with a BA. Quite low for a relatively modern city.

Hey

Chengdu University of Technology is a nice place to live. There are two foreign programmes as well as the regular university teaching, so there are a lot of colleagues to commune with. The apartments are clean, carpeted and well maintained, and utilities are free. It is less than half an hour to the city centre by bicycle or bus, and the food around the campus is generally rather good.

The standard offer for english teaching for the uni is 5000/18 hours or thereabouts. The foreign programmes pay more.

PM if you need any more info

As far as the others go, the Suining college is a little ramshackle (I worked for their Chengdu campus before, and visited Suining once - urgh), and the city itself is small and unremarkable.

Mianyang has a good rep for quality of life, but I don't know the university.

Chengdu is a very nice place to live, and not many people who come to live here bitch about it too much. The lack of direct sunshine due to the cloud has bothered some, but is offset by the lack of rain that you need to endure.

The city has all sorts of stuff to keep you busy and entertained, so no worries there.

I wonder if amancalledroger will be back on sometime to comment on the cataclysmic environmental armageddon facing Chengdu and the sichuanese countryside..... Razz
